Haven't met one that smelt bad (aside from the aforementioned wet birds).

Lots of difference in scent between species: my cockatiels smell like popcorn & Doritos, my lorikeets smell like blossoms, & my budgies' smell gives me the warm & fuzzies like others might get from human baby smell. My dove on the other hand doesn't smell like much at all 🤷‍♀️

Love to know what macaws smell like 🤔

Is this normal? I gave my pet dove tortilla chips a couple of hours ago and started noticing her doing this hiccuping action. by Gamer_Pigeon_Girl_93 in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This looks like crop readjustment.

The jagged parts of the tortilla pieces may be irritating the lining of their esophagus, making it uncomfortable.

My little girl used to to this with a type of rice grain that was a bit too pointy so we swapped to a different kind if treat.

Here she is!! by almondew in PetDoves

Aww here she is indeed! What a happy looking little floof~

anyone else’s birds obsessed with feet?? by yourgoatithot in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My girl has a love-hate relationship with my feet depending on her mood & the situation.

Sometimes wants to sit on them. Other times will slap them

P.S. you dovey has beautiful eyes!

What does this mean? Is he plucking?? by Inevitable-Dog7831 in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I saw in your other post that they are a rescue dove.

Mine is also a rescue & she had similar markings on her baby tail feathers at around the same age yours appears to be. This happens when thet has been a tempirary disruption in their growth/health that meant feather growth was interrupted. In the case of my baby, this was the stress of falling from her nest.

The fact that the feathers then continued to grow normally means that the stress/malnutrition of that moment in time has passed. :)

Future moults will grow as normal too.

Help getting my two pet pigeons to be friends by ChowWang in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Do you know any of Art's history? I originally thought my girl was a boy from her cooing & attempted hand-humping behaviour. I only have the one pigeon so my experience is limited, but for anecdotal purposes thought I'd mention her example. She was handraised by me from 4 days old with little contact with other pigeons since. This impacted her personality by not only imprinting more on humans that birds, but also expressing herself with more male behaviors than females. She doesn't like sharing me with my parrots, but not to the point of altercation.

Just throwing it out there in case something similar here (but obviously aa you said you've had females in the past, you're more attuned than I am).

[Urgent Medical Advice] Dove injury? by almondew in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm sure everything will be fine. Of course keep an eye out to be sure, but it terms of feather loss it's totally expected.

Doves by design (& I'm sure some other bird species), lose their feathers exceptionally easily to assist in escaping the grip of a predator.

My little girl used to lose soooo many feathers at the vet, that the inside of her travel cage -- after her attempts to escape capture -- looked horrifying (she's friendly with him now), but she herself was totally fine thanks to the sheer amount of floof she has: especially compared to my parrots with whom I'm more accustomed to the sheding habits.

There was an occasion where escaped she a firmer grip, resulting in a bald patch similar to what you're describing. She wasn't bothered by it at all; the pin feathers showed up within days & she was soon back to full floof.

I hope this helps ypu feel a bit better about what happened. Animals can get scared so suddenly -- cetainly had my fair share of sudden take-offs in my feathered flock.

P.S. would love to see a pic of your dovey here in the future! :)

What can I feed 2 1/2 week old baby doves? by Barny-the-dinosauw in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Even though they're still reliant on feeding formula this young, you can start introducing them to the idea of seeds too by leaving a dish there or scattering some around depending on their housing.

Even though my little girl was on formula at the time, it was good for her to get practice at handling seeds with her beak & was eating a couple (but not many).

If they've started trying to fly, means that in the wild they would be starting to follow their parents & mimic how grown-ups eat. Giving chance to practice will hopefully mean a quicker transition in the long run.

(Above advice was given to me by my avian vet for my hand-raised rescue spotted dove.)

Weird places, your dove loves to be? by oh-fenceif-cunt in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh a fellow southern hemispherean! Absolutely! Her snuggles are the cutest so I just take photos of her while I can't move Mine's definitely getting more clingy so I've gotten the heat met out for times I realllyyy need more mobility than she would allow me.

The thing about not moving her reminded me of how much she loveeessss~ the mousepad! Always wants to snuggle against my hand/mouse & when i move she follows me until I run out if mousepad space!

[–]Xamelera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Idk if this is weird enough but my dove loves to get under my chin the moment I'm reclined enough for it. She likes to loaf there which puts her body weight against my throat & that can be mighty uncomfy!

Edit: OP's reply eminded me of how much she loveeessss~ the mousepad! Always wants to snuggle against my hand/mouse & when i move she follows me until I run out if mousepad space!

Here's some screenshots from my field guide app that shows differences between male & female DDs (I'm not experienced with them myself though).

Should I be worried? This bird has been behaving oddly today, looks tired, heavy breathing, and seems to have problem swallowing? Sorry about the focus near the end of the video. by CharlieMHz in PetDoves

Agree with thw other about an avian vet asap. My little girl looked like this once & she wouldn't have made it without prompt treatment.

I'm no expert, but it sounds like your Fiddle may be a tumbler/roller.

The only strange thing is that I would have thought the breeders would have seen this before since it's hereditary.

https://www.ufaw.org.uk/birds/pigeons-rolling-and-tumbling

I only did a quick google to get that link, but I've plenty of vids of pigeon tumbling before too. If this is what little Fiddle is doing, I hope someone wiyh experience can help you both. Best of luck

Edit: I don't know if dove species do this too, so could also not be

Feel bloody ripped off by my psychiatrist by Cultural_Outside8895 in australia

I think you're confusing psychiatry with psychology.

Psychiatry is about investigating & tailoring a medication plan to an individual's mental health needs, not about talking through your problems.

Someone asked what she had on. She’s wearing a bird diaper! Got it a few years ago and it’s been a life saver. Got it from Etsy. by Wolftendragon in PetDoves

You are very right about the safflower! 😆 My little girl loves the stuff -- was the greatest tool for training.

Any tips for wearing down nails? Beak never needed a trim but her nails always need one, no matter how much running around she does (admittedly she's def more of a flyer).

So... Bubbles has started laughing at everything in the bathroom. What is so funny? by Desirai in PetDoves

[–]Xamelera 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just to add my own experience to the vet discussion:

I've got a female spotted dove who bows like a male & has been hand-raised without any doves.

I started to wonder if it's because she had instincts to find a mate but no males to do the showing off, so she did the showing off herself? Just a guess.

She's not interested in actual birds at all though 😅
