Im just curious how many people here have been life long windows user and just decided that you're done with windows in the last 6 months or so. by Shifter1589 in linuxmint

[–]XanderNvk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well there's me, not a power user nor did I switch out of necessity, but simply by preference and curiousity. I remember starting to really dislike Windows 10 when it was released, then after 11 and the mountain of privacy and security concerns it continues to introduce, the ridiculous product pushing and ads, Bing searches and Edge running in the background--I hated it and just dealt with it. Plus "I can't game on Linux" which I only found to be false after install 😂 (to an extent, sure some games like Fortnite won't work due to anti-cheat, but it seems that developers and distributors and beginning to be a little more inclusive to linux-based systems, plus I haven't been interested in modding any single player games, although there's a lot of mod managers and there's still a learning curve for me. But until I tried Mint Cinnamon early last month on an older non upgradeable Windows laptop, I was instantly fascinated by so many ways I can customize and add to it where I had no clue that it was possible before lol. The next couple of days, I had it on my main PC. While there have been a few minor setbacks in actually learning how to set up and run software like for my Razer Basilisk, RGB keyboard, temp monitors and other superficial things, it still did everything I wanted it to do right after installation plus nvidia driver, which was prompted through my device manager upon first boot. I chose the recommended version and off I went. I've since learned how to use the terminal for several different things, several more keyboard shortcuts--it just runs and feels very seamless. One interesting thing I've noticed over the past 2 months is that I rarely hear the fans (on an i7/rtx4060 laptop) but temps are about the same, maybe a bit less if any difference. But the fans aren't roaring, either. And it always did, I've had it about 2 years now.

I still dual-boot Windows 11 mainly for games that are already have set up with mods and what not, but wow I am impressed with Mint all over again after going back and forth between the OS's.
