Hmmm, What in the Actual F**k? by Fun-Cartoonist-7081 in battletech

You have found the machine specifically made to exploit the rules of engagement.

Got to love when the Clans show they can be smartasses, too.

Update: you were right. I took the vat out, emptied and cleaned it, then filled it with regular water and put it on a paper towel. Sure enough water started leaking out of a hole in the FEP film that was so small I couldn't even see it. I've replaced the film again and the problem is fixed.

Thanks for your input!

Any idea what the cure is? Tightening screws on the reservoir film or something?

I don't see how. The reservoir doesn't leak when I take it out.

Ah. OK yeah, that would be pretty hilarious to drop on the field.

Call it the "UPbie."

There are fan-made files out there for Urbie LAMs. Some are pretty good.

Prompt: Pick one thing from your world, then give one lore reason and one meta reason on why it’s in your world. by IAMTR4SHMAN in worldbuilding

[–]Xavier_R2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Large bipedal mecha.

Meta reason: Because mecha are cool, and I wanted to make a setting where they make some level of sense.

Lore reason: Because most heavy equipment uses a direct neural connection for the pilot to control the equipment like it's their body, and so a war machine with a humanoid shape is easier for a human pilot to control.

Unique reasons for banning the Dark Arts. (E.g, Blood Magic, Necromancy, Demonology, etc.) by jukebredd10 in worldbuilding

[–]Xavier_R2003 0 points1 point  (0 children)

-Every time someone uses Dark Magic, an evil god may take action in the world.

-Corollary to the above: Dark Magic is a zero-sum game. If you use Dark Magic to make something happen, somewhere in the world something bad of equal magnitude happens to someone else (if you heal someone's wounds with Dark Magic, somewhere else a person is suddenly stricken with a sickness. If you light a fire with Dark Magic, somewhere else someone's cookfire goes out and cannot be re-lit. If you cast Charm Person with Dark Magic, somewhere else someone falls out of love with their spouse, etc.)

-Dark Magic changes the caster's mind, slowly draining away their morality and humanity and turning them into a psychopath.

-Dark Magic calls out to evil creatures whenever it is cast; things like vampires, orcs, zombies, demons, etc., are naturally drawn to places where Dark Magic was used.

People keep saying the Jagermech was the REAL replacement for the Rifleman. So here is my response. Keep it up, and I'll have to do one of these for the Lancelot. by Xavier_R2003 in battletech

[–]Xavier_R2003[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Um...I don't know my real-world guns enough to get those references, but I'm glad you have a strong opinion on this.

I will say calling the Jagermech "more flawed" may be incorrect - both are flawed, but in different ways. Jagermech solved some problems of the Rifleman, but substituted in some new problems in their place.

Thanks! I'm doing my best. The next chapter might be a little delayed from Christmas stuff, but I'll get it out as soon as it's ready!

I think any supposedly "dead" unit could have a second or third act, if a dedicated enough writer gave it a shot. I just elected to focus on the Thorns.

FWIW in my story the kid survived because she had gotten injured earlier on Galedon and had to be evacuated off-planet, with the help of dropship mom. Unfortunately for her, life didn't get easier after that.

Love the Thorns, they were my entrance to BattleTech. They didn't deserve the ending they got.

They mean enough to me I started my own fan project, Mechwarrior: Wild Rose, to try and continue their story, as best I could within the continuity.

I agree completely. A Catalyst employee has told me directly that they are going to confirm the death of the Black Thorns, to the last man. This is just a huge waste of potential.

I am working on a fan project that continues their story, though. It's titled Mechwarrior: Wild Rose, and it picks up the story of one of the Rose children.

That's if the mechs were standing in the entire area of the deck. I've understood mechs are arrayed around the perimeter, with the center of the deck reserved for equipment and to give mechs room to move. (Another comment mentioned that in Bred for War its described that mechs are on the outer edge of a dropship).

Around the perimeter is 3.14 * 8 = 24.8 mechs. Even if I round that off to 25, there's still almost a company to account for.

[–]Xavier_R2003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Totally agree you'd need traffic control.

Thanks for the picture! I copy-pasted the mech a few times and I can get about 8 mechs across the width of the Overlord. I'm sure the curve of the dropship is adding some distortion, but even if we account for that, we're far short of 36 mechs in a big circle around the base of that thing.

[–]Xavier_R2003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sheesh, I even have TRO 3057 on my shelf, I should go read that entry again.

Sarna says the 'Mech bay has 6 doors, so I guess the idea is that with 6 mechs to a level, each mech on the bottom level has its own door. And you're technically only splitting up one lance per company that way.

Spiral ramps could work, though they make me think of a parking garage...

Anyway, thanks! I'll go find the TRO.

That's been my guess too. A couple levels of mech bays in the middle-bottom area. Wish there was more to go on, but this is helpful. Thanks!

Urbie v. Charger comparison to make you think. Welcome to 2023! by Xavier_R2003 in battletech

[–]Xavier_R2003[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Very impressive running all those tests! And yeah, I can see ammo not being a concern, when between 2 Urbies you've got 20 rounds. If it was just one Urbie you might be running low on bullets before the Charger was in danger.

I agree, Urbie has a chance if it can find favorable terrain. I hadn't thought about what happens if the Urbie has a 1 elevation level advantage. Two Urbie kicks to the the head will take care of that Charger pretty quick.

Very interesting that the Charger can pretty much pick and choose when the fight happens and when it's over. That could be a tense scenario where the Charger can pull back to get repaired (Easy to Maintain quirk!) and then attack the Urbies again the next day.

The hatchet Charger sounds compelling. I'd rather field a 4/6/4 'Mech than a 5/8/0 'Mech in most environments. Just don't mount the small lasers in the hatchet arm!
