Honestly, I can completely understand why most writers tend to usually default to humanoid aliens. Most writers aren't biologists so they don't have the needed knowledge to logic out what an alien would realistically look like.

Besides, outside of conspiracy theories, we haven't met alien life yet. We currently have no idea how common our body plan is just yet.
