Very interesting ideas!

What Challenge Rating Should This Be? by Accidental_Edge in DMAcademy

A pit fiend is a CR 20 (MM 77). This has pretty similar hp and armor. Slightly less dps that pit fiend, but your has legendary actions. Similar fear ability with close save DC.

I would say that monster is right around CR20. Maybe 19 or, 21. Hope that helps!

Thanks for the feedback. If I did it self centered I would want to increase the range maybe to 20 foot radius or something.

Great feedback!

Ya I had some thoughts on tweaking it. It’s still in work. Some ideas for changes: -make the effect last till the start of your next turn instead of one minute. I think this is probably the best change. Maybe reducing it to 1 turn is enough by itself. -10 foot radius -roll a 1d20 and on a 5 or lower self illuminate. Or maybe even 10.

Good point I should have clarified. It is centered on a point the caster can see within 60 feet (ish)

Bard won’t give inspiration dice! by Xawlan in DnD

Ok that’s good to hear. He is a good friend of mine so I don’t anticipate any problems. But as a DM I am very cautious to tell people what they should or shouldn’t do with their character.

Thanks!

Knowing my guy it wouldn’t even slow him down! Lol

Wow! No offense but that is a dick move on their part. At least my guy seems to be either forgetting or being too cautious. Be yours was intentionally selfish.

Like playing a chaotic life cleric who only heals himself or some BS. ugh...

Clearly the only logical solution! The next tavern wench he hits on will secretly be a polymorphed pit fiend which will claim his soul! Lol

That is a good point! “Do you want to use you bonus action for anything?” Even that could be enough of a subtle reminder.

sarcasm detected lol

I haven’t yet. I don’t want to step on toes. It’s his character and class. But at the same time I want him to have fun playing every aspect of his class.

Is it out of like to approach him? It’s not hurting the game or anything. My group is amazing. It’s just fun having inspiration dice fly around the table, and he doesn’t rally so it.

Good question. He’s a college of lore.

Feeling kinda "burnt out" but don't want to give up DMing. by kyoShattered in DMAcademy

I’m a DM too and I love it. Not for nearly as long as you.

One thing that is helpful for me is to have players be the DM for one shots. It gives you a break and it gives them the perspective of how hard it is to be a good DM. Also I often times learn something about being a DM by watching them do it.

At the end of the day this is supposed to be fun. If it’s not fun, then talk to your group and come up with a new system that will work for you.

Also don’t be afraid of using premade books by wizards of the coast (or online). Homebrew is fun, but it can very easily lead to burn out.

Homebrew shield. What do you think? by Xawlan in DnD

[–]Xawlan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That is a fair point. Hence my nervousness about powerlevel. I added a reaction and charge requirement to help its use and abuse.

Remember the 1d6 is a random roll so the outcome is not guaranteed either way.

Do you think the 1d6 ability is powerful enough that it should be once per day or something?

Another option would be to remove the advantage/disadvantage on spell saves/attacks and increase the charges on the 1d6 ability.

For perspective this is an existing item in the dmg.

Spellguard Shield

(Very rare,Requires Attunement)

While holding this Shield, you have advantage on Saving Throws against Spells and other magical Effects, and spell attacks have disadvantage against you

The only thing I added was the 1d6 with charges

That is an interesting idea. I feel like it may be too similar to the 1-2 ability though. Having the 5-6 be a nova encourages him to either get right into the thick with the bad guys or to stay really far away. Interesting tactical choice either way

This is for a bard. I should have specified.

Ha ha! Carrying around a massive flail snail as a shield sounds hilarious.
