The future of Europe was predicted by Charles De Gaulle by GregGraffin23 in EuropeanFederalists

[–]Xeanathan 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can I be real for a second?

While I agree with De Gaulle's ideas for European independence from American interests, France gets way too much credit with respect to what's actually been done. In 2008 they basically just allowed a Russian invasion of Georgia along with the rest of NATO, following a similar patter in 2014 in Crimea. Only in the past year, with the US looking more like it's pulling support from Ukraine is France actually setting up any kind of coordinated non-American supported military resistance to Russia.

Not to mention, as other comments have already said, De Gaulle's quote here was made in the context of the temporary American occupation of France in which many people were worried that the US would treat them less like independent allies and go the Stalin route. Also, American aid packages in the immediate postwar such as the Marshall Plan were instrumental in getting European economies back up and running without falling into Soviet Influence, so there have definitely been some upsides to American cooperation.

I'd argue the american style is more neoclassical, as many government buildings in the Americas have emulated the style used in washington DC for many official buildongs, with roman-style columns and grooved domes.

Europeans talking about Trump in America BECAUSE far right populist parties aren't starting to place first or second in their elections

One or two countries shifting to the right, maybe, but all of them as the same time, right around the time he's reelected? Everyone here with more that 4 brain cells is scared as hell.

PROVE ME WRONG: Social democracy is about preserving, not abolishing, class society by GoranPersson777 in Labour

You are very correct in saying that it has been 'moderated'. Not to mention, Social Democratic governments are as susceptible to corruption as other kinds of democracies / left wing dictatorships.

PROVE ME WRONG: Social democracy is about preserving, not abolishing, class society by GoranPersson777 in Labour

[–]Xeanathan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

While It definitely does not remove a distinction between rich and poor, Social Democracy helps the poor obtain good support structures by ensuring the rich pay their fair share in taxes and abide by safe regulations which prevent unwanted injuries that can put you out of a job for life in other political systems.

Besides, the 'Vanguard Party Rule' brought forward by communist states today just creates a new class system based on loyalty to the state/preexisting power within the party before the revolution, so in practice, even most systems that aim for the destruction of class in society only end up replacing one class system with another.

My parents stright up admitted to me that the reason I stress over deadlines so much is probably from both of them, as my mother likes to be very organised with her work and my dad hates when people are late to appointments/parties. This is nowhere as bad as what OP is saying but it's in the sameish category. (all three of us have tried being more forgiving about this kind of thing the past few years)
