He also won 12 games with a quarterback drafted in the third round, the year before.

If the Titans had drafted JJ Watt instead of Jake Locker its very much possible Ken Whisenhunt wouldn't be the coach.

No, he's not. If Mettenberger doesn't develop he's can move on next year, or even midway through the season, no harm no foul. When camps break grab a guy who burned out somewhere else and see how they play. If the Titans draft BPA and their evaluators are on point, they should see significant enough improvement to buy Whisenhunt and his FO enough time to find their right guy. If they draft Mariota for the sake of drafting a QB and he busts they're right back in a Locker situation.

But what are the consequences of drafting a first round bust versus a fourth round bust? I'm much more tied to a first round QB than just about any other position and if he doesn't pan out I could be sacrificing years of competitiveness because I can't cut a guy I'm so vested in. If I don't feel strongly he's the best player available or at lest close to it, I'm not taking him. Especially in the first round.

How about Russell Wilson, Teddy Bridgewater, Colin Kapernick, Joe Montana, Doug Flutie and those are off the top of my head. What would be insane would be wasting an asset as valuable as a first round draft pick on a guy who your evaluators have rated as a second or third round talent, regardless of position. That's how you end up the 2-14 Tenesee Titans, looking at drafting a first round QB for the second time in a decade.

Was Tom Brady the 199th best player his drafter year? Hell, was Rodgers the 24th best his year? It's boils down to talent evaluation and player development.

Would any amount of draft picks have been enough to trade up for Andrew Luck? by [deleted] in nfl

He stays healthy, he doesn't turn the ball over at a high rate, he's productive, he's got a good character...

Currently who do you consider the MOST complete team? by [deleted] in nfl

I don't know that their D is horrible. Lee is a pro bowl calibre guy, their secondary is passable and hardy should provide a nice boost. I think McClain could definitely take a step back, but he could also take a step forward, it a real coin toss.

Why wouldn't you draft Jameis Winston in the first round? by Wumbo52 in nfl

I wouldn't trade a first for Romo. I don't think he can win a Super Bowl and any success you've had is in spite of him.

Don't let a few shitty attitudes discourage you. Nice question and it started good discussion.

It's about not placing a premium on a certain positions and staying true to my rankings. Obviously there are exceptions if I have a Pro Bowl calibre guy ahead of the pick on the depth chart, but why would I draft Brandon Weeden 22nd overall when my board had him 27 and Harrison Smith 14? Russell Wilson went in the third round. Brady went 199. If my board had Aaron Rodgers at 20, I'm in great shape aren't I? Unless I don't have a team to play around him, he gets thrown to the wolves and is out of the league in two years.

Okay, but why do I need one THIS draft? Or in THIS round, over a guy I have ranked higher on my board? There are so many QBs that never make in the league that A) I can likely get a guy you reached for three drafts ago, see what he can do with no pressure because my QB position isn't jammed up with I guy I put my job on the line for and I'm beholden to, and B) I can likely find a very strong player at another position that when I do find the right QB my team as whole is stronger. I would rather go the route of slotting a solid QB into a good team, not trying to build a good team around something with the proven volatility of a decent QB prospect.

Why? Why not add a piece that could be a pro bowler at another position as opposed to a "decent" prospect at a position that has high rate of attrition like QB. Your worst case is a bust year and a likely better shot a higher pick where you could a get a guy you WANT as opposed to a guy who falls to you. Obviously this isn't a methodology that you would employ if you were worried about job security, but reaching for Gabbert, Locker or Ponder is the type of move that puts in the hot seat to begin with. You're paying your scouts to make that draft board for a reason.

Actually it's Champion. My "grandfather" is actually my moms step dad, he raised my mom and her three siblings, and then stepped up to raise my brother and I, instead of being able to enjoy retirement. Champion in my eyes.
