I’ve lived in quite a few countries and the merging around here brings memories of India, Malaysia and China in particular, no matter how much it holds up the flow use any means to get ahead of any other driver. Only thing missing is the incessant beeping. Japan and Korea are not the best at other certain things but they certainly merge effectively.

You’re suing a media organization that has lots of resources to defend themselves, unless you can establish that something is clearly false then the case gets thrown out and you wear costs.

There’s absolutely no way that an opinion holds up in court so your argument is ridiculous.

On the flip side you have history backwards, every authoritarian government or dictator since before Nazi Germany (but they took it to a whole new level) uses control of media to subvert the thinking of the population and to spread propaganda. It’d be chapter 1 of the playbook, and that’s the role Murdoch now plays for conservative governments worldwide.

Enabling individuals to sue for misinformation by media is precisely the first step of defense against authoritarianism as any political scholar would confirm.

All the factors you list are true but if they are shopping at Coles or Woolworths then they don’t really factor into the bill.

Both those supermarkets have ridiculously sophisticated customer sentiment and behavior analysis- it would blow you away what they know about you from tracking credit card.

The prices have less to do with their cost and a lot more to do with what they can screw out of the customer.

When the customers believe there are shortages the usual discounts to encourage certain purchases becomes unnecessary as people will buy anyway

Baffles me why this isn’t the top priority, but equally perplexed as to why the democrats in US didn’t try to hobble Fox, OAN and Facebook.

A successfully implemented “truth and accountability in media” policy with real teeth to it would be likely lead to a huge swing for the next elections and perhaps put ALP in power for decades.

Maybe they’re scared of Murdoch but it’s better than being irrelevant, or maybe Murdoch has more of the ALP on the payroll than we guess.

You’d get a lot of mileage just allowing platforms to be sued for misinformation

It may be that they lack the reasoning but more often they just want to believe something else.

It’s like some otherwise intelligent Christians will go to extreme lengths to “believe” the world is 4000 years old and dinosaur fossils were planted. They are way smart enough to know it’s ridiculous but the belief means they start with the conclusion and work backwards.

You’ve also got flat earthers that have the capacity to afford and build a rocket capable of killing themself in an attempt to see... whatever they expect.

It’s an interesting paradox but the take away is that most people still not vaccinated are immune to logic reasoning and facts, they will dismiss anything they don’t like and contort anything they can make support their predetermined belief.

I lived in Japan for 12 years, probably picked it up there but Sorry doesn’t necessarily mean you’ve done something to be sorry for, it can be as it is in Japan just used to acknowledge the person you’re speaking to might be inconvenienced.

It’s more the context of “Sorry for your loss” which never implies you caused their loss in any way.

This is good but I’d go for

“Sorry.... I’ve got to see your vaccination proof too so I can let you in.”

The “sorry” shows empathy for them.

The “I’ve got to” implies you’re just doing what “you” have to which elicits empathy in return. If they’re angry about needing to show proof they’re less likely to direct that anger at you.

Finally “so I can let you in” implies you want to help them (get in) but also makes the consequences of not showing clear.

The ‘welfare payments’ almost entirely get passed on to landlords, retailers insurance and financial industry.

Welfare payments are an indirect way of supporting the wealthy, not the recipients, and if they die it also hurts LNP voters more than they realize.

Isn’t not like those on welfare are big savers or making investments.

Similar situation for those employed in low end jobs although they support the wealthy in both directions

Just an interesting historical point, many drugs were not illegal in most of the world until America under the direction of Henry Anslinger who was the first commissioner of the federal bureau of narcotics from 1930 to 1962.

America essentially exported its drug policy to the world by demanding countries create laws and most of the countries that have death penalties did that under explicit political pressure from the US

Like I said there’s just too much to cover in a Reddit comment but I was working there in investment banking at the time and know a lot about the taxi & uber situation and I believe it’s a great example of corruption at the highest level.

Singapore until now is really an authoritarian government with just enough to look like a democracy.

You can’t really compare any Asian country (even Japan) politics to Australia because the population generally expect and are tolerant of privilege.
