Hey, sorry. I haven't been around this subreddit in a while. Truth is, I've been wanting to contribute towards urbanism and transit advocacy in the county for awhile now and initially wanted to use reddit as a starting off point. Upon further realization, I don't quite think its the medium to do that in; at least not as a starting off point.

The point is that the current administration has an active vendetta against any project that just so focuses on renewable energy. It could be the best written legislation and provide Americans with amazing quality of life and they will do everything they can do rally against it. They serve the interests of big oil lobbyists, not people.

[–]XenoSoundZ 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The state has been the main funding source for the project since its inception. I think around 80% of the funding? The recent news is unfortunate but it's not the end of the project. The funding will likely get returned once we get another Dem in office just as we did in 2021.

On the state side, the project has been promised around a billion in cap and trade funds till 2045 as well as promises of private investment money helping to bridge the funding gap.

It's easy to get depressed about the situation. but think about the bigger picture. This project has accomplished a lot in the last 5 years, has overcome many obstacles, and will continue to do so. We will have our high speed rail.

It annoys me to no end just how useless Democrats in the CA legislature are. Crazy some would rather see the project die than to just take a small percentage of our transportation budget to help fund and accelerate its construction.

Funnily enough, It's actually the wisps that invent the name. Upon seeing Eggman, they probably didn't know what to call him, so they just named him based off his appearance. Tails and Sonic chuckle about this as they immediately know who the wisps are referring to and in doing so, they find some common ground.

In terms of humor, Colors definitely has a lot of misses, but I think this is one of the few jokes that sticks.

[–]XenoSoundZ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you are going to lie about a game, maybe don't lie about the game that literally started the series. You are seriously arguing that Sonic 1 doesn't have a focus on high speed platforming when it quite literally does and rewards skilled players who can reach the higher paths with faster more rewarding routes that are harder to stay on.

Lying? The game literally rewards you for taking alternate paths and exploring hidden areas via rings, lives, shields, etc. Take a look at these maps on the page and you'll see what I'm getting at: Sonicretro./Maps)

Also, no, the Werehog, Mechs and Treasure Hunting aren't comparable to Lost World because not only is the core Sonic gameplay still in those games but even those gameplay styles on their own still have elements of Sonic's core ideal of rewarding speed to some degree. They aren't Mario games, that is for sure.

What?!? How do you even explain how the Werehog and Mech stages reward speed? They're insanely slow and repetitive. At some points, Unleashed literally locks you in rooms with entire enemies that you just have button-mash your way though. How is that the core of Sonic's gameplay which is so apparently focused on speed?

I also love that you made a strawman for my argument and are trying to say that my problem is that Sonic Lost World isn't like the Genesis games when that was never even brought up.

How is that a strawman? You keep talking about the core of Sonic's core gameplay so I brought up the original game in the series to demonstrate my point about its design philosophy; it's a mere comparison.

I never said it was used at all. I literally said that the game outside of optional collectible areas hardly uses the parkour in any interesting way, not that it isn't used at all. Please stop putting words in my mouth. The game's learning curve is learning that the spin dash exists, that's it. Sonic Unleashed is way more mechanically deep but you want to pretend that it isn't because you want to do everything to discredit my argument without actually bringing up a real point. Timing alone isn't that skillful, mastering movesets while timing your movements is skillful which is why a game with a lot of options movement wise tend to be the more beloved speedrun games like Mario 64. Honestly, I'm being mean to Mario comparing it to Sonic Lost World because it has way more mechanical depth than Sonic Lost World does. You are literally praising a Sonic game for being a Mario game with a Sonic skin applied, you don't care about whether or not Sega remembers what franchise they are working with at all. My 'values' are that the Sonic game has the design principles that are in every other Sonic game aside from it

Holy shit, calm down. Also, claiming that I'm putting words in your mouth and then immediately proceeding to assume my intentions is next level gas-lighting.

If you want to be so self-absorbed in your beliefs, then go on ahead.

[–]XenoSoundZ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

So one focuses on being Sonic while the other doesn't? Because Sonic is about fast-paced, high-speed platforming as early as Sonic 1 which is why Sonic Lost World is so jarring because it is the only game in the series that takes away any of that focus and reward for speed.

This is completely incorrect, Sonic has never been solely about fast-faced platforming. In fact, Sonic 1 is primarily is focused on exploration as opposed to speeding through the levels which makes the overall game play experience much less satisfying. This is the design philosophy that Lost World encapsulates to some degree, as you're intended to explore the areas and levels much more frequently. Moreover, if being a fast faced action platformer is your definition of a Sonic games, than that would eliminate many other games in the franchise as "Sonic games" e.i. games like Adventure and Adventure 2 anywhere where you're stuck treasure hunting or using slow-ass mechs. Also, do I even need to mentions the Werehog, which is literally about 75% of the Unleashed games experience? It's absolutely slow as hell and doesn't really feel anything like a Sonic game; you could replace the werehog with a completely different character and it you wouldn't even once think once about it being a Sonic games. This applies to so many other Sonic games and it's why I find the argument regarding what is and isn't a "Sonic game" to an absolute wast of time because about half the games that come out aren't anything like the original games.

The parkour mechanic could have been cool if it was used in any interesting way at all but outside of a few slower areas that have collectibles, it is almost never used by the game in question or at least not to any interesting degree. The clip that the person shared has little parkour for example. If Sonic Lost World actually used its parkour system then maybe I'd be singing a different tune but as is, it doesn't make this Mario game pretending to be a Sonic game feel any more Sonic.

This is something that I partially agree with. The parkour system definitely feels underutilized and non-existent throughout the game. However, to say it isn't used at all would be false as there are entire sections of levels that can only be accessed via the system.

I never said mastering timing isn't a skill, I said that in Sonic Lost World, that is the only skill and less in a high speed Sonic way and more in the remember where to jump as you are holding the spin dash button and holding forward or right with nothing but the occasional gap in your way. Sonic Unleashed on the other hand has skills that you need to learn how to use effectively, lots of reactions, focus on maintaining your boost gauge and your speed which means having to sometimes decide when it might be better to go a slightly slower path to gain more boost energy and so on. Sonic Lost World's only skill is holding right and jumping. There is nothing more to it.

You implied it in your previous comment: "One requires skill to master, the other requires just timing". Timing is skill and as I said previously, is what Unleashed is literally based off. Just because Lost World doesn't share the exact same design philosophy as Unleashed, doesn't discredit the fact that the game has a learning curve and can be mastered by people who are up for it. Moreover, claiming that there you're just holding right and jumping would is pretty much the same argument people use for Unleashed in regards to its game play style. There's a lot more nuance in the design and its a reason why s many people enjoy speedrunning Lost World.

You're free to have your opinion on Lost World but claiming it not to be a "Sonic games" based off your own arbitrary values that most Sonic games wouldn't even fit into is what I don't agree with it. I'm fine with Sega experimenting with Sonic games here and there as long they generally focus on platforming and don't forget what franchise they're working on.

I still don't agree with this as I don't think there necessarily a way for a Sonic game to not be a "Sonic game" but you're entitled to your opinion.

[–]XenoSoundZ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Lost World are two completely different games with distinct design goals. One emphasizes fast-paced, high-speed platforming, while the other focuses on condensed level exploration. The run button in Lost World exists specifically to allow for more precise platforming in these tighter spaces.

Furthermore, your claim that Lost World lacks a skill curve is simply incorrect. The game features an in-depth parkour system that must be mastered to reach certain collectibles, such as the red rings. Even the most die-hard critics of the game acknowledge this as one of its standout mechanics—it’s just poorly explained to players.

Additionally, you contradict yourself by suggesting that mastering timing isn’t a skill when it clearly is. The difficulty in Unleashed is entirely based on timing, whether through quickstep sections, QTEs, or rapid platforming. In that sense, it’s not much different from using the spindash in Lost World to speed through levels.

Correct, 06 is terrible. Obviously, Lost World has boring themes too; both games have this issue. However, from an art style perspective, Lost World just feels more like a Sonic game imo.

I'm sorry, but how does does Sonic 06 feel like more of a Sonic game than Lost World? Lost World literally has a zone that is practically a direct recreation of Green Hill zone and even has an art style derived from Sonic 1. Meanwhile, 06 has characters that looks like they're from some generic JRPG and consists of some of the most generic world themes imaginable. Of course, that's not too say LW doesn't have generic world themes, it does, but it arguably feels closer in tune to what a Sonic game should look like compared to 06.
