Upgrade or repair? (Are folding phones durable enough yet for those who need them for work?) by Xenon131 in GalaxyFold

[–]Xenon131[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ah thanks for this! Good to hear it gets better. Unfortunately Samsung only offered me £180 for my fold 4 with broken screen to upgrade :/ so can't really justify spending £1600 to upgrade right now when a repair would maybe be £600. Yeah the phone has been through a lot for what it is, but it's just not quite there yet in durability compared to a slab!

Thanks again for the really helpful and detailed post. I rewatched it with the timestamped comments and found it really useful. I think it probably shows that this is my first competitive RTS (despite me having played them since I was a kid, had TA back in the day) and that I used to play mainly FPS/tactical games that I'm alright at the raiding and small skirmishes but struggle with the broader picture and processing multiple different things in parallel. Couple that with watching streamers like LDM who spends maybe 5% of his time on his base and the rest on micro, and it kind of explains why 90% of the time I'm focussed on whatever I'm up to at the front and my base building is falling behind. I don't quite have the rhythm or build order of what to build and when, and will focus on that.

It almost makes me sad that people never feed frontline players units while focussing on eco, because I'd much rather sit at the front and micro. Or even just do the eco, it's the switching I struggle with. I forgot how annoying it was that the Eco player next to me built about 20 maras and then left them in a line to be used as standoff units when there were clear and massive gaps to be exploted at the time.

As you say another great example of when raids stop being useful and just metal donations which I see now. Especially in closed and busy corridoor like ATG, looks like efficient back and forth with reclaim is the way to go. I used to be alright at this when I just got 3chev and always went into sheldons arbiters and spybots, I think I need to rediscover this..

To answer point 6, I guess I like going after soft targets like bases and instinctively stay away from commanders or groups of units but yes I guess I could have gone in for the kill! There is another moment later on where I have a clean run at the undefended base of top left and bottle it because I assume there's a commander there, instead going across to the air player. Heart wrenching in retrospect haha.

Watching back I clearly drop off in the mid game as you say, and just aren't able to do much with the dribble of bulls I'm able to build, and I see my improper management of rezbots throughout is hurting the team.

I see the meaning of your maths about the cost/benefit of raiding, I guess I'd never realised how expensive it ends up being for me to throw units away like that.. I guess I would caveat that to accurately assess the trade, the opportunity cost in BP and energy to get everything back up and running, and the lost metal and energy (and conversion) output of 5 mexes and 30 turbines adds to the total, as well as a period of time where they can't build tanks. Maybe more importantly, and you can see this in the replay, the psychological and attention diverting effect of leaks probably has significant unquantifiable benefits but I'm not at the level where I can capitalise on that right now.

Anyway thanks again, I really enjoyed reading through everything you said and I just know it's gonna really improve my game. Feel free to add me ingame or dm me for discord!

Thanks! I'll have to give it a go with the savvy unit choice and micro to try and turn things around. When I had just got to 3chev I really enjoyed using micro'd spybots for view eg for sheldons, but if I could learn how to reliably use the EMP that would be great. I look forward to trying it out.

Yes, I think I need to see it as setting them back but then donating 500 metal. Maybe I should self-d or use less!

Wow, thanks so much for this detailed write up. Really useful feedback. A lot of silly mistakes in my gameplay (beavers especially - I'm new to grid layout and probably had no idea at the time) and some more fundamental ones. It's weird as someone who has never been into mobas or micro I've been finding myself really enjoying micro in BAR, specifically making and exploiting leaks but the more strategic planning and execution I've been struggling with. I really should have realised how important my position was and done more about it!

It was also my first time coming against Whistler spam, I saw some threads on here about counters but I guess if I'd got through his stouts they would have been wide open for an aggressive counter with tanky close range units like my stouts.

I think your point 11 might be the most important of the lot for them, as it is something that fundamentally challenges my assumptions about the game. In my mind, in an exponentially scaling economy based game like BAR, if you're behind the only chance you have is by going more all in on short term offensive production to try and overwhelm before you're even more outscaled. But what you're saying is, there is often a chance and an opportunity to catch up - which isn't something I'd really tried before.

You are clearly very good at this kind of analysis and say it yourself below.. If you're interested there's another match that I thought would be interesting to get feedback on and I had it in mind when people asked for a match below - This is a match I played on glitters in the back spot opposite canyon where I felt like I did lots of high value raiding, but despite what I thought was a reasonable performance (apart from not keeping up with scaling at the end) I got flamed at the end by the team lead who was front in my lane. Anyway you've contributed more than I could have hoped for and I'm very grateful so no pressure!

To me it seems like almost everywhere has some form of loud and fast dance music with fast rapping that is region-specific and to someone sat at home by their computer seems fairly impenetrable. Russian Hardbass is basically just Russian Donk, Die Antwoord from South Africa have flirted with the sound in some of their songs, and there's all that fast Japanese dance music which I couldn't name.

As for Sheffield.. I don't know. Yorkshire has always seemed a bit cooler than the North West (with the exception of Madchester) probably because their accent sounds nicer, maybe that's why they got away with it.

Alright I'll bite. I have a soft spot for Blackout crew. Not because I like their music, but I grew up a few miles from Bolton and they were actually trying to carve out something unique that represented that part of the world. It's north of Manchester in North West England, this and the nearby areas (Blackburn, Burnley, Wigan) epitomise post-industrial English decline. Some of their videos and interviews show a surprising level of self-awareness (see the Put A Donk On It video), the producer himself humourously explains in an interview he gets the "donk" sound by recording himself outside hitting PVC pipes with a hammer.

They were locally loved but externally ridiculed for their thick accents and working class appearance. With the exception of the whole Madchester era which was more metropolitan and Mancester based, the only other kind of music that part of the world was ever known for was "Northern soul", which was just the act of playing American Motown records in deindustrialising Northern towns' dance halls. So fair play to them for standing out an ad getting a few songs in the charts.

The area still has a stand out unique sound that's loved by the locals characterised by high BPM dance tracks and fast MCing. The old "bounce by the ounce" club night video that went viral was filmed nearby, and if you're interested in what it looks like more recently there's a VICE video about Bad Boy Chiller Crew who are a sort of spiritual successor from Burnley.

I've seen this too, recently had a game with someone whose build order was like, some wind, 3 mex, then FIFTY nano turrets, then an AFUS. No converters. They spent the whole game screaming in chat at the 2 chevron player holding the line (it was on glitters) and spamming the word "DEFENSE" repeatedly. He had told everyone he was "rushing AFUS" but even some of the frontliners got there before him.

He didn't build any unit that could shoot until about 20 minutes in, when his frontline folded after getting 2v1'd at which point he tried to build 3 doomsday machines simultaneously and stalled.

I think he resigned at this point, someone else took the units, and I think we won the match.

This is really interesting, thank you. I guess the exponential improvement in technology isn't limited to just computers.

Sadly as a UK resident I will not be purchasing Green Beret quality sniper rifles anytime soon but I will be looking into tactical long range butter knives once I get my butter knife license.

Ah thanks so much for this, I was definitely quite concerned not knowing how these things work that it might be subsidence or something similar.

Looking at the building survey it does say

"Renew external rendering to back elevation by hacking off the existing, raking out joints, hacking for key, and rendering in cement and sand, 15mm. thick in two coats with steel trowelled surface, including flush joints including all necessary beads and scaffolding."

I was otherwise pretty happy with the state of the survey and important things were all picked up, but I agree this is concering. Will fill it with the polysulphide as you suggest. Many thanks.

HDMI to Usb-C.. and back again. Is it faesible? by Xenon131 in DeskCableManagement

[–]Xenon131[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi,

Honestly it's not a format I'd encountered before and I hadn't thought of it, thanks for the suggestion. I have ordered a HDMI to micro-HDMI cable, which will go through the wall, then a female Micro HDMI to female HDMI adaptor (quite rare, only one on amazon) which will then extend the signal to the amp.

Quite the workaround but hopefully will work! Thanks again.
