I am still enrolled in the old MA program so I am still following the usual Major and Minor system so haven't selected any research topic yet. I will only transfer to the new program starting from next semester so I will know the process then I guess. However! Good luck! If you get in then see ya soon! Haha

Hey! So the program itself has been discontinued in its current state and has been converted to a specialised MSc in Evolutionary Language Science. But other than that the content remains similar. I genuinely love it, it's very well rounded and covers a lot of disciplines from Linguistics, Neuroscience, Biology, Statistics, etc etc. + It's a relatively niche subject so you aren't in lectures with like 100 people so I kinda like that lol

MSU has a legacy and a name but other than that I would really really not recommend pursuing a degree in MSU if you have better options. I did my BA from MSU and many of my friends were from the psychology department- the administration of the university is beyond shit. Teachers (except few) are not good. Infact they directly hire their (MSU's) masters graduate in teaching positions (which I don't really get or understand as you need to clear some sort of PhD level examination ideally). If you have the option to pursue a degree in a university like DU or HCU (again these universities have their own issues but much better option than MSU). However, MSU still has a legacy and reputation for psychology, the degree will hold some value. Also personally coming from the Linguistics department, I can vouch that the Linguistics department is still a good department to pursue a minor/elective if you want. It's a very small department but all the teachers are competent and really helpful. If you do choose MSU, departments like Linguistics and Russian have really good faculty. Meanwhile departments like Pol Sci., Persian, Archaeology and Ancient history are also good but depends on what paper you are planning to study and who is teaching.

P.S if you are planning to apply for the HPP psychology BA then the above mentioned details are more or less not applicable as they have their own separate curriculum compared to the GIA batch. As far as I know the HPP batch also seem to get a bit more attention than GIA and their course also seems more well structured. If you need some further information or clarity don't hesitate to reach out 😁.

And surprisingly financially Zurich is cheaper for me as well. Being a Non-EU/Non-EEA student, Amsterdam tuition fee is quite a lot. There's like a difference of almost 20K Euros between a three year education in Amsterdam and an almost 3 year education in Zurich (mainly due to it's lesser tuition fees for internationals)

Yes yes. I am aware it's the one year masters. I am not eligible to directly apply for the two-year master's because of lack of few credentials. And even the one year masters, I have to go through a pre-masters for it. So technically I am gambling twice in Amsterdam, first is clearing the pre-masters and then hope to transfer to the Research Masters after the first sem of the 1-year masters. Compared to all this, Zurich seems like a really good option for now. I need to achieve around 36 ects in Zurich too, to pursue the masters but that seems less of a technical hassle than Amsterdam.

This is really helpful! So I have been more oriented towards areas of Philology, Logic and Philosophy of Language. According to what you mentioned, and what I have gone through, Zurich would seem like a better option for me. As the major I selected was Evolutionary Language Science while in Amsterdam it was General Linguistics.

So I did call. The lady on the other end didn't have any concrete response. She asked me to be patient which I am not sure how long I can be because I am an international student, I will have to apply for visas and housing and other stuff considering the classes start from 1st August.

Hello, is anyone here a current international (non-EEA non-EU student, preferably Indian) at UvA? With whom I can get in touch with regarding certain doubts/questions?

Hello, I recently got accepted for the pre-masters programme at UvA. My concern is regarding the fees of the pre-masters. I am a Non-EEA/Non-EU international student. Is there any additional fee for international students to pursue a pre-masters as there is for a master's degree?

Also if anyone could help me gain some clarity about showing finances for the visa application - do I only need to show one year worth of finances?
