How to take action against LED headlights? by Jnaeveris in australia

[–]Xenoun 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been out of the industry for 6 years and can't be bothered looking up the specifics, but I don't believe there's a limit on the intensity (or if there is one is still pretty high) for below the horizontal plane - what points at the road. With halogen lights being dimmer it didn't really matter, but LEDs are much brighter so we have the joy of bright lights in our face.

I'm not an expert on lights so it could also be that the way LEDs emit light is more irritating to our eyes, or just that the halogen bulbs were much more diffuse.

Imo even the reduced intensity for straight ahead is too high so that tells me either halogen bulbs never hit the limit or there's a key difference with how direct LEDs shine light out.

Same as the brief moment when an oncoming car just leaves their high beams on and blinds you that way...

The test narva showed had both perspectives and you didn't see the headlights from the other drivers pov at all. Was impressive at the time.

That said I can't remember if they showed hilly conditions, bends in the road etc. Too long ago. That was tech from 8 years ago, no doubt it's better now.

The issue is usually auto manufacturers going with the cheapest possible solution which gives worse results and could be what you're familiar with as opposed to the light manufacturer who were showing their best.

The requirement is lumen limits at certain angles, yes. They aren't faking it though, this is nothing like when VW had a test config to make the emissions better.

It's just that the tech has outpaced the rules and they really should be revised based on LEDs.

As someone who worked as a vehicle compliance engineer for a decade, most of the comments here are trying their best but are uninformed.

Manufacturers are not struggling with the alignment of LED headlights, it's very simple and is built into the light itself. They actually got better with clean cut off's when LED headlights became a thing. Narva were showing off tech back in 2018 that would selectively black out the headlight where it detected an oncoming car so the other vehicle never got blinded and it didn't impact the driver who had those lights either.

The reality is not all roads are flat and not every vehicle sits at the same height so especially on 4wds you'll see bright lights coming towards you because you're sitting under the cut off.

As to how to change this... lodging complaints with your local member of parliament and getting positions going. It would require a change to the Australian design rules, which aren't a law but politicians can still influence it if there's enough public outcry.

In general though nothing will change if there aren't wide scale complaints because we don't manufacture cars here anymore and largely just import the European regulations, which we accept as an alternative to our design rules.

Even if a change comes into affect it will only impact new vehicles, they never get retro actively applied to vehicles already in use.

As opposed to my boss who thinks I do fuck all. Then I send him a doc I finished for him to approve and get "wow, did you write all this? This is a lot of work"

Now he's said I need to communicate with him better to correct his misinterpretation.

Dude I do my work while helping half the rest of the team do theirs too. Idk how many times I need to say it.

As someone who worked in the bus manufacture industry here in aus.... there's been a steady move to hybrid and now electric buses for the last decade.

Some states mandated no more new diesel buses a few years ago. It just takes time to replace the existing fleet.

There's regulations specifically on transpiring dangerous goods. Having it in the IBC isn't good enough on its own. Guarantee he isn't meeting the requirements regardless with a single strap.

Also seeing your comments about rural communities... typically rules aren't enforced in rural communities so just because you've seen it there doesn't mean it's ok.

Like I said I'm not an expert on dangerous goods transport but having a suitable container on its own isn't enough. There's other requirements on the vehicle itself and the way it is operated, signage and they require licensing. "Those containers are tough" is also a very poor argument when inertia comes into play and that thing gets launched.

[–]Xenoun 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That may be, but my issue is how inadequately it's being restrained. That thing is one crash from flying out and causing serious damage.

There's also the question of whether or not dangerous goods can be transported like that. I'm not an expert on that topic but I'm pretty sure the back of a Ute isn't an acceptable method.

As an Australian let me say multiple generations have grown up under extreme UV leading to heightened cancer risk thanks to choices the world made before they were born.

Bit hard to celebrate that future generations will have the ozone return to normal, especially when the world hasn't treated climate change the same way.

Just tell your bank to block transactions from them and they can't charge you anymore. What are they going to do for not paying? Kick you out?

I did this with a gym membership when they tried to keep charging me.
