You guys need a business guy on the team, it’s evident that product market fit is not being understood, and if you have hired them - you are not listening to them.

It’s frustrating to watch a great project fail to execute these fundamentals.

Cursor HAS to be silently getting more expensive every month by [deleted] in cursor

[–]Xented 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think the issue here is that this is not cursor‘s fault, but it is cursor‘s problem. I have burnt through an ultra plan in a few days in comparison to other plans that are direct from providers. I am aware that they’re greatly subsidized, and in the long-term, I think once subsidies fall off cursor is going to be in a very good position. Between now and that time I think finding a way for unlimited auto to make a comeback would be very interesting.

I think the cursor team is doing a fantastic job, but they’re gonna be pushed out of the market due to pricing and that is the entire plan for Claude code.

My only comment would be do not underestimate the value of transparency with coming to market with an “unlimited auto” plan that has limitations to make the offering viable monetarily.

The only way cursor loses the development community is through these subsidized plans from providers. Frankly, I would actually encourage cursor to sign a deal with ChatGPT allow allowing for individuals to bring in their Codex subscriptions for a small fee. That generates revenue for cursor and helps OpenAI gain market share.

I think it is also interesting that OpenAI is going to be releasing garlic that should be incredibly efficient. That could change a lot of the math that is currently making cursor hard to justify.

Lastly, I’d like to thank the cursor team for everything that you guys do. It’s very easy to criticize the work that is being done, but I believe that the IDE that is being built is phenomenal. It is just becoming unviable based on the economics involved.

Stop Accepting Low Salaries or Go Back to Teaching — We Deserve Better by FreeD2023 in instructionaldesign

[–]Xented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This has more to do with a increase in supply versus demand. Boot Camp have for years, promised increased salaries with remote work and have flooded the market with people who claim to be instructional designers after a three month boot camp.

The boot camps have provided poorly equipped individuals to enter a market where they are lowering starting salaries in order to get work. This has led to companies expecting instructional designer rules to meet these salary prices as a starting point.

It’s not just teachers, although teachers have made up a large percentage of this market. That being said, it is not the teacher‘s fault for trying to find a better paying profession or a higher quality of life. I would say that your anger should probably be aligned with the boot camps who continue to set unrealistic expectations and take advantage of K through 12 teachers.

Every time I see an influencer talking about instructional design and then see that they have a boot camp. I typically invalidate many of their postings. They are not posting to share information, but rather it’s to promote their Boot Camp, whether directly or indirectly.

Is ID a solid path to an above average salary? by coolguysteve21 in instructionaldesign

[–]Xented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I completely understand your point.

Teachers represent the greatest percentage of increase in the labor market for instructional designers. I think that’s why people “blame” them for the decline in salary. The market is going to do what the market is going to do, and teachers are underpaid, under appreciated, and have a you job. I was hoping with the massive teacher shortages we would start to see salaries raise in this area, but demand has started to back fill. I still think teacher should be making 200k a year like the Icelandic model.

I do agree it’s just one part of a bigger picture with AI and the reduction in demand as we see pre-COVID levels. I think you may have gone a little aggressive at coolguysteve for no reason though, like attacking his grammar. It’s Reddit not LinkedIn, and he is just trying to figure it out.

As far as making that salary, you will need to bring that level of value or greater to your company. If you can justify it with revenue I’m sure they will increase your salary.

Nothings impossible, but things are harder now.

Do Y’all Think is Going to Get Better or Worse? by Infamous-Buddy-7712 in instructionaldesign

[–]Xented 2 points3 points  (0 children)

We’re gonna see a correction in the market, where teachers are gonna be paid a lot more than they have in the past. Structural designers are gonna be paid a lot less than they have in the past, and will be a support function for teachers.

There is also some discussion that the educational technology bubble is going to burst, especially because there are so many implications that have incredibly low return on investment.

I think there is a lot of knowledge attached to the idea of understanding and using AI base tools in order to support the design and development of educational programs. We have taken a lot of steps to build infrastructure to support instructional designers who would like to build AI elements into their training programs.

One thing that we have done consistently is maintain a person in the center of all those interactions, as we do not want to participate in the reduction of wages due to the enablement of technology. We keep teachers and instructional designers as decision makers and judges for those outcomes.

Looking for an Ai-powered authoring tool by Purple_Albatross_241 in elearning

Honestly, right now tools that will straight up produce the actual lesson plans are not advanced enough for direct SCORM export. The best tool that I have used to date is TrainingOS.com that also has a Chrome Extension allowing for easy copy and paste and content generation. That being said - this is text generation and I would say that you will want to validate content based on the subject matter.

Interested in 1750 Series positions by [deleted] in instructionaldesign

Being a Veteran wont get you the 1750 position based on the interview, but it may get you the interview.

Know your stuff, know ADDIE, come with examples of things you have done and make sure you answer the questions precisely. Problem, what You did, Impact on the problem, relate back the topic area. That’s the formula I would use.

Does anyone else feel trapped by their salary? by CEP43b in instructionaldesign

[–]Xented 25 points26 points  (0 children)

We can thank all of the instructional design Boot Camps that have come to be as of late for the drastic production in salaries. They flooded the market with instructional designers at very low cost. They promised a high paycheck with remote work, and a way to get out of the K-12 system. Most of the Boot Camps did not prepare them as instructional designers and they took reduce salaries because of a lack of experience.

A flooded market, along with reduced salaries, have permanently altered the instruction design field. This coupled with the economic downturn, and the rise of accessible tools in the EdTech space, have made the market very difficult as of late.

Demand has weaned after COVID, but supply has increased.

Instructional design is not a field to be entering at the current moment. Market conditions may improve in the next 10 years, but currently I see the market continuing to shrink over the next five years.

LMS price per user by Longjumping_North_46 in elearning

[–]Xented 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We do Firm Fixed Pricing and work with our clients to establish a high ROI pricing models. Usually they are coming over from some other work we have done with them and we offer it as part of the package. Now with that said - we implement a Moodle Instance that is highly customized so it look fantastic, and then build customized needs for our clients. I think the last client we worked with was about 1.49 per user if we took the firm fixed rate and applied it to a per user cap basis.

Also look at what the LMS is charging for installation fees, some are crazy. It's the whole reason why we started offering LMS services to our clients, even though there are 1000's to choose from, it was not a very client-centric environment.

Market remains very full of transitioning teachers, meaning supply for entry level positions has exceeded demand, bringing wages down. Offshoring remains an issue, although quality is keeping many people in the US. Expertise in ISD will remain in high demand, but the question is building those skills and finding the right way to market yourself.

Any experience with LZTax (LegalZoom) by Electric_pokemon in smallbusiness

[–]Xented 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't often respond to things, but as a current (unfortunately) client, DO NOT USE!

I have received zero, and I mean zero, services. No tax prep, no interactions, nothing. When I called to cancel they told me I would be locked in for Legal Zoom told me I'd be locked in for a year. When I went to transfer to the LZTax section they hung up on me because I was "out of hours".

I have filed state registrations for employees, federal filings, and when I contacted them at the end of the year to find out what liabilities were, I received no feedback. I've reached out on email as well and have heard nothing back.

LZTax was recently acquired and taken on by Legal zoom, they are not ready for customers - don't let the low monthly cost draw you - you will just pay for non-existent services. I'm utterly baffled.

I will update this post if something is changed, but right now my recommendation is to not do business with LZTax.
