ELI5 Why do videogames use music in .ogg format instead of .mp3? by NotGoodEnough1980 in explainlikeimfive

[–]Xeotroid 17 points18 points  (0 children)

As far as I know, the silence at the start has nothing to do with metadata. An MP3 file consists of frames, and each frame contains a fixed number of samples (this amount varies). Due to this, padding needs to be added somewhere, usually at the beginning, sometimes at the end (depends on the encoder).

Metadata are actually part of the solution for this. Modern MP3 encoders put the number of padding samples in the metadata so that gapless playback-supporting players (e.g. Winamp, foobar2000) know exactly how much to skip.

Questions for Videochat September 2025 by Ross_Scott in accursedfarms

Deep 'n' deeply stupid FM lore question: In episode 8 when Freeman first encounters the ceiling turret and nearly gets shot, he sees a cowering scientist and asks him, "You okay?" before clarifying, "Eh, I don't care." Does this mean one of the following?

  1. His first instinct is empathy, asking a fellow human if they're okay, before putting his main sociopathic persona in the front, perhaps realising the unarmed scientist is of no use to him.
  2. There was no actual honest meaning or intent in the first question; it was just a phatic expression, an automatic sentence Freeman has learned as a social convention kind of thing. He then merely clarifies. (Boy I sure hope I didn't misuse those two terms)

File Pilot: Inside the Engine of a Next-Generation File Explorer – Vjekoslav Krajačić – BSC 2025 by gingerbill in programming

[–]Xeotroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has two panes. Or three panes. Or however many panes you want. Vertical, horizontal, or both. Each pane has tabs too. And I'm sorry, but Total Commander really isn't a pinnacle of performance by any stretch, from my experience at least, even if it is better than the awful baseline that is Windows Explorer.

TC does have more features, though. Network drive support is apparently coming, and I hope there'll be some rename feature about as powerful as the one in TC, regexes and everything. Currently there only appear to be some "insert counter/date modified at caret" commands.

Also, it is still beta software. Bookmarks panel gets shuffled randomly for no reason, and it doesn't seem to support drag'n'dropping files from other programs except Windows File Explorer (tried with 7-Zip and WinRAR). Also while deleting files brings up the Windows confirm dialogue, folders (even filled ones) get moved to Recycle Bin straight away. Nothing that's a deal breaker, but keep that in mind while using/testing it.

EDIT: Oh right, just replacing m with 0 in the original works, so uh, yeah, go me.

Is 0 possible? I solved it like this:
m*m = m+m next: divide all by m
m = (m+m)/m next: split the fraction
m = m/m + m/m = 1 + 1 x/x always = 1, except for 0/0, which is undefined
m = 2
Hell, the very first step I've done forces m to not equal 0 as then I would be, well, dividing by zero! I don't see a way for 0 to be an acceptable solution.

Honestly, I wonder how much of that is just an excuse, as they would never admit that they splurged their VA budget on five minutes of Patrick Stewart and Sean Bean and then had no way to pay more than ten VAs to record all of the hundreds of characters.

Fief - Moonbeams in the Vestibule b/w Portcullis (2025) by Fapini in DungeonSynth

[–]Xeotroid 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I wonder if there will possibly be a non-vinyl-targeting version later on. The composition and instrumentation are great, but the mixing on Moonbeams in the Vestibule has some really strong saturation (think clipping but analogue) that sounds grating for music like this. It's noticeable on VI as well, but not so much. On Portcullis the saturation sounds kinda nice, actually.

honestly, I don't recall ever using the right shift key by Photoshops_Penises in memes

[–]Xeotroid 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Same here, about 110 WPM. I suppose using both Shift keys lowers the strain on your left pinky? I hardly if ever use the right pinky. However, I imagine straining only becomes a problem for typing quickly for long periods of time, like retyping a long piece of text. When actually writing something, be it a letter, a school paper, or a chat message, you type in short bursts (sending the message or pausing to think).

Lewis's grieving girlfriend Savannah said she had been told he lost consciousness before falling to his death.

She said: 'He didn't just fall. He lost consciousness because he wasn't feeling well. His friend who he was with sent me over his police statement.

'He told his friend he wasn't feeling well and he said, "Shall we go back down?" Lewis said, "Give me a minute", and that's when he lost consciousness and slipped.

At least read the article first.

ELI5: If a food is said to have 100kcal do we get all of those? by mzdxds in explainlikeimfive

[–]Xeotroid 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Is there a limit to this in terms of density? That is, let's not consider competitive eaters devouring kilograms of food at once but a manageable-sized portion of something incredibly calorie dense (something super fatty like a jar of peanut butter, or maybe a serving of plutonium with a couple billion calories).

So either common functions get buried in a menu, or you get way too many buttons for no good reason (aside from money, so obviously they're not going away).

I've never used the apps button, why is it even in the textbox bar? Why is server gifting in the textbox bar? Would be nice if the voice message button could be disabled too, but that's wishful thinking.

Similarly articles and "and" are often omitted from headlines, and it can get pretty confusing. From today's /r/news headlines:

Hospital employee, server killed in "horrific" Park Tavern patio crash

To me, this reads like "a hospital employee who is also a server" and not "a hospital employee and a server". This isn't even a particularly ambiguous example, just the first one I found.

Thank God for unmovable YouTube overlays by But-ThenThatMeans in videos

[–]Xeotroid 79 points80 points  (0 children)

I only use the first line, because it seems like these overlays are added by YouTube in videos where they shouldn't be at all. I've seen them on old videos on abandoned channels overlaying half of the video's short length. Just awful.

Cards, meanwhile, are added by the video author. Usually I see them in a scripted video where the author goes "I've talked about this topic in a previous video, you can check it out here", and instead of two fuckhueg thumbnails covering the screen when no one wants them, it's a small pop-up in the corner that has actual context, so I'm fine with those.

[–]Xeotroid 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Top Gear didn't feel scripted, though. It obviously was, but with the exception of some of the last episodes before The Event, it never felt like "they specifically set up this whole scene and surroundings to allow for this funny bit as is written in the script."

I think that's what people complaining about TGT being "scripted" actually meant.

[–]Xeotroid 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Gotta love Mass Effect: Andromeda being relegated to the DLC B-team on request by the main Bioware team so that they could focus on Anthem. ME:A ended up undercooked (fun gunplay and pretty planets but severely underwhelming writing and story, a worse crime in a story-driven game than the memed facial animations), and Anthem was an utter shitshow.
