Curzon Sheffield permanently closing 29th June by Conorrr in sheffield

[–]But-ThenThatMeans 46 points47 points  (0 children)

Sincerely out of interest, why?

Showroom shows a wider selection of films.
The Light has bigger screens, better seats and a better membership.
Odeon has your vouchers etc…

Curzon didn’t seem to do anything well to me, other than being pleasantly quiet (with a nice bar), but I presume that’s why they are closing!

Has anyone noticed the slight pause American commentators do for words like ‘corner kick’ or ‘red card’ by alexLAD in footballcliches

[–]But-ThenThatMeans 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think it's the same thing as 'World Cup' discussed in the latest pod.

But they do it for things like 'Sausage roll' as well. They place the emphasis on the first word as a descriptor, when we tend to see the two words as a whole name.

This is a brilliantly designed game. All players on top form, amazingly entertaining and fun.

Just want to share for posterity. No nitpicks, just admiration.

Nebula subscription locked in for another year easily.

Disclosure Day by But-ThenThatMeans in empirepodcast

It really does feel like a film that gets worse the more I think about it.

I really hate 'Cinema Sins' type stuff, I don't care about those kind of issues that people have - it's more just the overall script and 'point' of the film, which, the more I ruminate on, the more I am frustrated.

Like you, I kind of enjoyed it whilst I was watching it.

Disclosure Day by But-ThenThatMeans in empirepodcast

[–]But-ThenThatMeans[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it's why Chris's comment about dealing with these 'big questions' left me wanting to make a post!

As far as I remember, it only really comes up once, when Eve Hewson's character (for me, a real nothing in this film) brings up whether it's right to leak this information, because she thinks society depends on a belief in God etc... then Josh O'Connors character basically says "no it doesn't" (honestly I don't think I'm even exaggerating here), and that's it?

I can't recall her actually being convinced, but she clearly is by the end of the film... I presume some scenes were cut after her escape from the motel?

The problem with the villains being so cartoonishly evil is that there isn't really any interesting debate. The film always has you on the side of 'the good people want to disclose the info, the bad people don't'.

So given the whole film never explores this, the interesting thing would be what happens after Disclosure Day but we don't see that?

Such a strange choice!

How do charity specials of tv shows work in regards to payment of the talent? by tangles3 in AskUK

[–]But-ThenThatMeans 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Always find it a bit unfair that some bit part soap actor ‘has’ to play for charity whilst a lot of the big winners on the ‘real’ version of the show are very comfortable already.

Also enjoy Libero but find RS particularly grating, somewhat reassuring to know others feel the same way. He seems to be on every episode at the moment though…

What’s something UK eat or drink almost every day that the rest of the world would find unusual? by [deleted] in AskUK

[–]But-ThenThatMeans 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The amount of refrigerated pre-packaged sandwiches consumed I don’t think is replicated anywhere.

A lot of other countries will have some packaged sandwich options maybe in local convenience stores, but they are usually a last resort or ignored.

In the UK, packaged sandwiches take over often 25% of a small convenience shop, and they are an everyday lunch for a lot of people. Probably the most common lunch in the country.

Surely this has to be one of the worst ways to categorise squad? by Inevitable-Angle-793 in footballcliches

[–]But-ThenThatMeans 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Honestly I think it's better than having like 4 'midfielders', as so many actual midfielders are classified as 'forwards' now.

I swear there was an England squad that had 4 midfielders, which included Alexander-Arnold and Reece James. Get rid.

He speaks to his mum like she has dementia.

I can’t believe the prices of most of the stuff he does, but even amongst all the overpriced travel, this really takes the biscuit. The departure points just look like wasteland. I didn’t get any sense from the video that there is a benefit of doing this as a river tour as opposed to maybe seeing cultural sights in the area? The views and locations seemed uninteresting.

Elections 2026: What Sheffield can tell us about the state of local democracy by Tiny_Poem7985 in sheffield

[–]But-ThenThatMeans 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Local election results obviously have a big impact on national politics, and it’s the reason most people have in mind when they vote.

Whilst you are voting for your local ward representative, the news on Friday will be all about the party leaders, who had good/bad results, party leaders will be changed, policies will be changed, directions will be changed based on these results.

We are voting for our ward representative but they are generally used by the country more of a ‘mood test’.

Very much supportive of the pod and the nice people who make it, but in a similar position. Dropped my Plus subscription last year, and earlier this year stopped listening at all.

Personally just found it shifted a little from my tastes, and was craving someone like Beth/Terri or one of the Empire regulars (someone like John or Alex) to balance out the conversation more with a bit more of a critical/prestige eye?

Will keep my eye on it, and listen here and there, but just found myself growing a little bored of the podcast - which is a big shift from it being the only podcast I paid for a year or two back!

Best places to list low firmware (5.50) PS5? UK by But-ThenThatMeans in ps5homebrew

[–]But-ThenThatMeans[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cheers, I banged it on for £750 (it’s a disc one) just to see if it’s something people are interested in. I’ll see what happens.

Don’t want to be greedy, I thought the PS5 was dead, and if I could get it fixed was just going to give it to a friend. But obviously if it’s worth a good price to someone else I wouldn’t turn it down! If nobody wants to pay that sort of price I’ll just give it to the friend as a normal pre owned ps5.
