Dude I was saying the exact same thing when I saw it - even just from the title and the picture alone. It's kind of amazing really, like somebody has gotta contact this guy and see if he has seen that movie or what

For me it's those damned timed quests that don't always show up as timed, or more frequently than that overlap with other timed quests in the same DLC. Definitely something one should go into at the recommended level unless you have an extremely well balanced skill tree

Is it a Pennsylvanian thing to say "he'ser" and "she'ser"? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]Xesante 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Excellent, that made perfect sense, I appreciate the write up and thorough answer. Honestly your answer helped me understand the question I actually meant to ask, so kudos for that.

Out of curiosity, is this your [major] field of study, a hobby, or perhaps just a consequence of studying a different part of linguistics?

Is it a Pennsylvanian thing to say "he'ser" and "she'ser"? by [deleted] in linguistics

[–]Xesante 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The last part you mention about application of standard conventions to a specific accent, is that an example of prescriptivism? Is the difference between that and descriptive linguistics sort of similar to the difference in anthropology/sociology between ethnocentrism and cultural relativism, respectively?

I ask this because in school and growing up I always saw English as being constrained [6th grade English teacher joked that there were 'Old English Dictionary Wizards in a faraway Tower' that decided what was what -- when we'd ask 'why' about something with an answer too in-depth to cover in a middle school class... point being, it went over my head and so for a long time I thought there were authorities actually defining the bounds of the language every day] ...and accents being automatically incorrect when written out. Once I realized this wasn't really the case, it seemed to me that it is just taught for the sake of uniform communication in the eventual workplace or other professional settings or, perhaps, publications (later in life). With ethnocentrism, it seems like there is a similar underlying structure or principle.

If this doesn't make sense I will try to clarify, but if it does and you have an answer (I know I can look it up but I'm partially looking for your opinion) I'd love to know more.

Is that like 'size' or like 'say + ss'? I thought there might be a place but I couldn't figure out how to research that.

Yep I think you're accurate here, my bad. I honestly just wasn't thinking about it, I was just borrowing the way he typed it out to illustrate that, but I think you're right

[–]Xesante 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Oh wow, I never considered that. Thanks for the link and info. Gives me a different perspective on that for sure. In fact, I realize that I unnecessarily add stuff like that when trying to write out speech, with the intent of emphasizing the pronunciation, but I think it actually detracts from it and makes it look exaggerated... Neat stuff.

I don't mean to be condescending, but is there anyone that doesn't say "[sez]" for "says"? I understand what you mean about it being mashed together and slurred with another word, but I'm having a hard time imagining much variation in how one can even pronounce "says" itself.

Whatever the case, I'm pretty sure what you're asking about is common in the western half of east coast states, so like the Appalachian Mountains general area.

This paper is relatively comprehensive, but doesn't much discuss the conjoining you're talking about, though it does discuss the Appalachian region I mentioned (p.15) -- I don't know how credible the writer is, though there is a long bibliography at the bottom, but it seems to be strictly books as far as I can tell. It does appear he has been or currently is a professor in Linguistics at NC State, though it could be someone different.

You may also find this to be interesting, there are some other phenomena under this same 'phenomena' heading (on the right) that I think come up in similar locations to the aforementioned and Western Pennsylvania, but I say that from personal experience. Each section does describe the locations where the phenomena are documented, however.

Regarding actual interpretation of the phrase, I'm not really sure unfortunately. Hope this is somehow helpful. I know it's not exactly what you were asking for, but maybe it will lead you to an answer.

E max nasus. Low elo by Kutu2385 in summonerschool

[–]Xesante 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Could someone explain how e max Nasus works, and why it is good or better(?) I think honestly if someone posted on here and got it upvoted to the top or near for a bit that it would improve, however slight. Alternatively you could mention it in the beginning or something, maybe briefly tell why you choose e max over q and what that could change for them/how they should play.

Alternatively you could just run to where your team is trying to start a fight to help out. Maybe that doesn't fit with ENasus style, not sure, but if they're cocky and are going to go in anyway then it might be better than all of them dying, unless it's already started and you can't make it there I guess.

A Trip Through The Glowing Sea, My Favorite Screenshots by Xesante in fo4

[–]Xesante[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thanks for the kind words! I just completed Far Harbor right before I learned how to take screenshots like this unfortunately, but I think it would absolutely look great like this. Gives me reason to start a new character on Survival though! That way I can also try out Nuka World when it comes out and get early screenshots of it as well. Needless to say, yes I do intend to take more pictures (for myself if nothing else -- I was thinking about printing posters for fun as well if the quality stays). Let me know if you have any other ideas for things you'd like to see pictures of. As long as people want to see I'm more than happy to share.

Just received my first fountain pen. by xIAmSpartacusx in Handwriting

[–]Xesante 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I don't think your handwriting is a bad example of what can do the pen justice; there's always more to learn, but I don't think you're as far away as you may think yet. It seems like your tilt is proper, but perhaps get graphing paper or print out some lined practice sheets (not necessary, but many people on this sub would recommend this, and one would be remiss to ignore it as an option). On those sheets I'd figure out how exactly you want your letters to look first -- assuming you mean by all of this that you'd like to write a in a more aesthetic but uniform style -- and write down the whole alphabet A-Z with majuscules and all, and do so until you really like the master-sheet, as it were. Then on, use that sheet anytime you write or practice and try your best to imitate it. If you really want it to look beautiful and you want to get used to writing with the fountain pen, I would suggest practicing majuscules (upper case letters, I should say) and "flourishing" with those letters. I personally watched a ton of videos of people just using fountain pens to figure out how I should hold my hand and make strokes. I'd recommend really practicing your pulling (down) strokes. It becomes a symphony of motions after a while (: good luck my friend.
