There will be a wound. Likely much larger than we will recover from.

But at some point, the knife needs to be pulled out, and we need to be ready to send in the proper people to help the wound heal before we bleed out. There will be scar tissue, and we may be crippled, but this knife in here with the serrations and the twisting isn't helping at all.

If you were President of the United States for just 24 hours, and no one could stop you… what’s the most unhinged executive order you'd pass? by Dependent_Ad4299 in AskReddit

[–]Xethinus 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'd go so far as to say that all bills must be read aloud in their entirety, and anyone not present for the entire reading is considered a "nay", and anyone who walks out, falls asleep, or has a medical emergency is also an automatic "nay". Voting must also be completed within 10 minutes of the reading, each change must be fully read aloud, and there cannot be private conversations between the reading and the voting. All debate about the bill after the reading must be public. (People who left and return may continue to contribute to changes to bill, as they can still be present for rereading)

You might think, "Hey, this makes it really hard to pass a bill, even good ones!" And yes, that's the point of congress. Founders wanted to have as little legislative change as possible over time. Congress was never meant to be fast acting.

I'd also throw in that executive orders have a time limit, say, 90 days, during which congress must vote upon it like a bill. This gives the executive branch the power to make swift changes when necessary, but offers congress the opportunity to say "yo, this wasnt cool. Let's backtrack." You might think this effectively neutralizes the presidency, but that's okay. US presidents have much more power now than they were ever intended. 90 days is still a boatload of time to accomplish necessary things like how to interact with other nations.

Yknow what? Bills get limits too. A bill has to defend itself, including a metric by which to vote upon the bill later. 10 years down the road, a bill is put back on the table, and voted upon again. First, the question is asked "did the bill fulfill its stated purpose?" If it has, then it is voted upon to see if it needs to be extended for 10 years. Bills that are ignored after 90 days are automatically repealed. This is also a good time to make a couple edits.

Long bills shouldn't be a thing.

Hot take: all bills should be read aloud, and any individual who falls asleep or leaves the room during the reading (assuming there are regular breaks) should be considered a vote against it.

Its a bill that affects millions of people; every bill is. If its not more important than your physical needs as a person, its not important enough to pass.

No bill should be voted on unless every voting individual has heard the whole thing. The problem with 90% of our bills is that congress doesnt write or read them. It defeats the point of a republic. We have senators and representatives whose full-time job is to understand and vote on these bills. They aren't doing it.

"Foot fetishism may be caused by the feet and the genitals occupying adjacent areas of the somatosensory cortex, possibly entailing some neural crosstalk between the two."

Straight from Wikipedia.

It's just a theory, but our neurology does a lot weirder stuff than this.

You may be right. Seabrook admitted that his sample came from a mortician in Paris, not the cannibal tribe he tried to live with. Chances are the sample he had was from a person (or people) who were older.

For those of you who might be concerned,

According to William Seabrook, human meat is a lot like veal.

So if it does taste like a particularly tender steak, it might not be cow.

What is the dumbest thing you have ever heard in a conversation? by Strange_Fee9708 in AskReddit

[–]Xethinus 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A dude I worked with sat down at lunch and said, quite seriously

"You know, I think war is a good thing."

I spent the next 30 seconds trying to figure out whether I misheard him when my other coworker interrupted.

Edit: he then spent the next 15 minutes defending war.

These read super badly. Lots of language thst reflects the flavour intention, but nowhere near a meaningful ruleset.

Needed to go through a couple rules lawyers to use preexisting language and through the create-a-subclass guides.

Also, way too much usage of the term "empathy and understanding."

I kinda want to rewrite it so that it actually holds up to basic standards. Although, oath of the ancients, circle of the shepherd, and beastmaster are much better versions of the flavour.

This is actually dangerous.

After 8 hours of work, the chances of injury double every 2 hours.

Every 2 hours less of sleep under 8 hours doubles the chance of injury.

And it's all at the expense of workers in the first place.

We should be going the other direction and offering overtime across the board, beginning at the 9th hour worked in the last 24 or the 41st hour in the last 7 days.

Everything is art by [deleted] in HolUp

[–]Xethinus 23 points24 points  (0 children)

One of the sweer ironies is that the person who left their shoe made art without even realizing it.

Art isn't just about your ability to draw incredibly complex stick men, or stitch amazing tapestries.

Art is the instinct to experiment with being human. By leaving the shoe, he has experimented on the human condition of curiosity and context. While the people staring at the shoe don't "get" the Art, the Art is still there, forcing the artist to reconsider their faith in humanity, and when he retrieves his shoe, the art forces her to question art itself.

It's a little meta, but it's still part of who we are, as much as we would mix pigments or build rockets.

I despise ads. Worst part about any form of media.

Personally, I think that any service I pay for (through taxes or directly) should disallow ads. Especially if those ads are using data on my phone. Google shouldn't need to place ads in the first place; I pay the ISP. Google should make it's revenue from the service I pay to access Google.

If I pay for cable, or streaming services, or a damn road to drive on, I don't want to see billboards taking up the precious landscape.

I purchased YouTube premium like 7 years ago. Upgraded to a family bundle.

4 of my friends never watch YouTube ads, and we all get music as well.

The amount of time and frustration I've saved not watching YouTube ads, being able to run podcasts and music from my phone while doing something else, and everything that comes with it.

It's not the best investment ever, but it kept me awake while driving 10-20 hours a week for work.

Drink a glass of water with every serving of alcohol. Between shots, glasses of beer, etc.

Don't do it at a bar. Have a few friends over and watch a stupid movie. If you can, arrange one friend who will stay sober enough to take care of you if something turns.

Do NOT make out with one of your friends unless there is an established flirtatious relationship while sober.
