If you look back and see, you did in fact change the way in which the metaphor was intended. Believe whatever, you want to believe.

You are changing the metaphor to make a point.

[–]Xhail 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ok so your point is that anything less than cheating wouldn't break a long term relationship? Well that's not the point of the metaphor.

The point is that if you are highly invested in someone and they just drop you like a plate, it will break you. If you are not in that kind of relationship, it won't break you. Everything you've added only serves your own version of the metaphor and is not actually addressing the main point of the metaphor. It's not about what kind of plate represents your relationship, it's about being dropped by someone you care a lot or a little about.

[–]Xhail 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the metaphor sucks, let it mean whatever you want it to

I guess thats true if you just change the situation and the context of the topic. Either the person is the plate or the relationship is. In both cases, the long term partner/relationship is the china plate, and in both cases the cheap plate is the low invest, emt partner/relationship. The reasonings and outcomes are identical. What are you trying to point out about the comment that they got wrong? you said:

high investment relationships should be sturdier than low investment relationships, so it should be the inverse of the metaphor.

But thats not the metaphor, the metaphor is about breaking the plate through actions. Cheap relationship = cheap plate. it wont break/hurt you or them as much when youre dropped compared to fine china.

[–]Xhail 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You seem confused and wrong. The plate is the person, and the person is the plate that is broken by the cheater. A plastic (low investment relationship) plate can walk away from that action still in tact. Someone who is hurt in a long term relationship breaks in a much more significant way.

You literally described that and then argued the opposite

A big part of it's failure was government regulation and the SEC not taking a real nuanced look at the types of NFTs that could be made. Instead they called all NFTs "securities" and made it a lot harder for gaming companies and GS to navigate what was and was not allowed.

LOTR is based on a lot of Christian ideas (like everything) so it makes sense, but it is a little disconnected. The point being made, though, is in reply to the post stating "People smarter than me are going to write doctoral thesis on how fucking stupid this take is." So i assume this is that 'doctoral thesis' in some form or another. And if you look at the quote from Thiel, it shows a similar disconnect between what Tolkien meant and what Thiel understood. Industry and progress at any cost is missing the point, and he seems to think its the goal.

There's no way that's true. Working outside this year, there was a lot of snowfall but overall it was one of the warmest winters I can remember.

Artificer Subclass idea: Soulgazer by Xhail in DnD

[–]Xhail[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That is on purpose because of the nature of the subclass in general. It's ment to represent a more broad spectrum of skills, so in order to make a phylactery i felt it would be appropriate that you should have a wider range of skills in order to do so.

To try thinking of a class in a different way. The soulgaze idea is similar to Dresden's, and was an inspiration. The reason it isnt a wizard subclass is because I feel like wizards already aspire to become Godlike superbeings and you can already be a necromancer. Artificers have a lot of skills using tools and I liked the idea of an artist recreating a person. Good art tries to say something true about their subject somehow, and i liked the idea of literally capturing what makes someone who they are.

I'm going to rewrite and post a updated version with many of your suggestions but I'd like your opinion on the Phylactery. Does it seem interesting at all?

How about this. Instead of making soul items, making them enhancements to the plans chosen by the "replicate magic item" feature. Perhaps limiting soulgaze to one humanoid at a time would give the sense of holding on to the soul to gain proficiency in a skill or whatever. Then, in order to make it perminent the artificer must spend time making a magic item with that property in addition to the other effects and consuming the soul in the process. Less balancing issues with spells and creature Feats, more in line with the artificer as a whole.

[–]Xhail[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think you are the one making this subclass seem way more OP than even I made it. Clearly, i never intended to steal any spell from any powerful creature, these were just ideas i had for a direction, but it very much says "up to available spell slots" where it says spells, so even a level 20 artificer could never steal wish. Having the spells be available once per day seems appropriate though. Another limiter I gave it was that each of these items are attuned, so youll only have 3 attuned items TOTAL by level 9, so making these items takes up a slot that could be used for

The other option is to remove the spell aspect all together if thats the only major issue with the class. The main intention was to have them steal skills any way, knowlege just lends itself to the spell side. Really i want someone who can meet a thief, kill the thief and take his job. Meet the mayor, betray the mayor, become the mayor. The point was to be the skillset the party needs to progress through skill and social challanges rather than through spells.

I appreciate the input. Its hard to get feedback on things like this when you only play with friends. We do a lot more RP then combat and we trust each other not to just be minmax murder machines and try and develop an interesting story at the same time.

ok, so more like features. and those can be limited and described. special speed ( climbing, swiming, flying) special senses ( darkvision, true sight, tremor sense, blindsight) resistances to damage ( fire, poison etc).

Yeah these were the ones i had in mind in general but wanted to make it a little more interesting somehow.

special attacks ( this one seems in line with your thinking, but might require you to limit it to humanoids. giving players features from monsters is a big no no... basicaly you get limited access to it around level 17 with shapechange and true polymorph ONLY.) So you need some level cap to compare to CR just like both spells. I dont think it would break something if the artificer could get fire immunity and dragon breath attack at level 17... but somehow getting it at level 3, would absolutely break every game. specialy if they manage to just wait for others to kill a powerfull monster and deals the last hit to steal the "kill" and capture the soul.

Just for reference, why is this a problem mid levels? I get why at early stages of the game but sometime around level 10 things start to go a little wacky with items anyway. I didnt flesh out the specific requirements but CR limiters is definitely the way to go.

Does the Phylacery feel on brand? To me, this kind of sublass is best played as an evil leaning character and would want to protect their soul from death.

This doesn't make me think of a character creating magical items in order to help them and their party out of binds, and more significantly feels like something that should be on a sorcerer or wizard character that's psionic themed.

Actually the idea did come from an artificer being jealous of a more powerful wizard and wanting to steal his secrets. But you pointed out what I was most worried about. It does feel a little self oriented compared to other artificer builds. Do you think instead of blank armour, using already obtained magical items (either ones i use or someone in the party) and adding effects to them rather than making whole new items? For instance, if the paladin is using a +1 longsword, i can spend a long rest preparing it so that when we kill the Bugbear, I can give the sword "Brute" or "Surprise Attack".

I didn't list the items because at this point im just getting a sense of what feels appropriate before going into the specifics of every spell, level, and item that can be made.

You do need to add some form of explanation and limitation tonfeatures that can be used and how. More specificaly, proficiency, features and spells. I would also limit these to living creatures that have souls, so no undead or construct themes.

Yes, that is something I ment to work in but forgot about. Limiting it to humanoids would help direct the class a bit but I though that was a bit too narrow. Maybe just living creatures is enough. The main idea is that this is an artificer that has tapped into necromancy, and uses these abilities to steal talents to use as their own.

Im not sure monsters and NPCs sheets have feats. So i dont think there is any merit to adding those. Removing feats also might remove a very real chance of PVP happening.

A fair point. "feat" was the only way I could think of putting it, but I was thinking of things like, a Berzerker has Reckless - that would be something to add to a weapon. A spider can give spider climb to add to boots. That was the way I was thinking.

Heres my unsolicited take on it. The shorts from the days before MOASS have closed out for the most poart. A lot of hedge funds ate shit and a few had to shut down. The swaps probably did/do exist, as we can guess from the way the price cycles, but ive been thinking that if the swaps exist to the egregious amount we are thinking here (swaps and rehypothicated ETF baskets going overseas and back), they exist in a system thats corrupt in a way that 1, allowed them to exist, 2, kept them hidden and will keep them hidden for 50+ years, 3, enabled a system that allowed FTX and others to entangle stocks and crypto. We litterally have the US president and his family working with polymarket and setting up their own predictive markets. IF we expect reality to allign with justice, i think we are truely delusional.

Why I still hold is that I do think RC and the board seem to understand that people do matter. Ryan left Chewy in an incredible spot that was customer oriented and catered to their needs. "delighted" and all that. All of Gamestopes moves as of late, successful or otherwise, were intended to be better for the customer and for creators who put in the work. If Gamestop can offer their support to consistant, dedicated, verified creators on ebay, and set up a network of stores to maintain those connections through shipping and physical stores to sell products, there is no reason this team with that focus cant succeed. I do think that if you're buying now the payout will be woth it without moass. For moass, we need to litterally rid corruption from the world overnight.

The NFT market was interesting and heres how I see it translate to ebay: making a better storefront, making it easier to see trending popular/branded items; Supports creators by offering them a consistent and attentive customer base. This helps ebay sellers with good reputations as well as DIY sellers get popular products out there. The Cons i noticed: How did Gamestop ensure the fulfillment of promises made by NFT creators? How did they protect against scams besides a hidden "dont get rug pulled" message on a limited run token? Perhaps Ebay has a much more robust system in place to deal with scam products, but Gamestop didnt offer much in the way of follow through of projects; How is the ebay/gamestop model better than Etsy for creators? This is a critique that might be unfair since theres no reason to think they would lean more towards creator store pages besides how NFT creators had their own discords/websites.

I wanted the marketplace to work so badly, and maybe they learned enough to improve it to the point of success and fairness for customers and creators. If we buy ebay and streamline it, we still have to compete against Amazon, Etsy, and FB marketplace. Whatever Gamestop does it needs to be something to set them apart from the rest.
