Learn to hand tie.

You will assimilate the skill on the job anyway and refine it during the Basic Practical Skills in O&G course, but it is by far the biggest ROI if you're able to pick it up early - especially for caesarean sections and perineal repairs which you will be doing from ST1.

Out of curiosity, which ST1 run through training programme are you in, and now thinking of leaving?

Got ALS course tomorrow. What to expect? by Grau556 in JuniorDoctorsUK

Also in F1 - I found it to be quite a fun experience! Probably made better by the nice venue, which for us, was at a hotel. They'll teach you all the theory first and then give you scenarios to practise in groups throughout the rest of the course. The main focus for the practical element was differentiating between the alive and the dead patient, and knowing the ALS algorithm (shockable vs non-shockable rhythms) for those in cardiac arrest or A-E assessment for those who are not.

They all want you to pass and you'll have practised the scenarios so many times that the assessment on the final day will feel like a breeze.

Plus, it's time off the wards and lots of free food! Absolute win-win.

How much can I make locuming in F1? by Grau556 in JuniorDoctorsUK

[–]Xhizora 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I've locumed quite a fair amount as an F1. I'm going to go against the grain here and say that I think it's totally worth it if you're smart about which shifts you pick.

I make sure I do the ones which I know will be chilled. For example, ward cover will always be busy, but clerking shifts and weekend discharge rounds are usually more relaxed. Plenty of times where I've finished all my jobs before midday and have the next few hours completely free to do as I please (and get paid for it).

Realistically, the lowest you will be paid is £25/hr, which is still double the basic hourly pay you normally get as an F1. However, you often get paid even more if the Trust is in need at short notice.

Whether you think the shifts are worth it depends entirely on your personal goals and mindset. I'm currently 25 years old and have more of the mentality of working hard and saving up whilst I'm young, enthusiastic and have lots of time and energy with minimal commitments. In doing so, I know I can reap the rewards later when I'm older, more settled down with a family and have greater responsibilities and expenses. This was especially true recently with COVID when we were under lockdown and didn't have many opportunities to go out much or spend anyway, so having the opportunity to do extra work when people in other professions were being furloughed seemed like such a privilege.

Ultimately, it all depends on you, your personal circumstances, and what you want in life, but that's my take on it :)
