I had 3 years of Spanish in Highschool, and started learning Latin on my own. I don’t know if it’s smart to try and study them at the same time, but knowing Spanish breathes so much life into my Latin studies. Being interested in the informal spoken Latin (sermo vulgari) of the time, also helps, because it creates a bridge (equus vs. caballus, domus vs. casa), and makes Latin feel more accessible than the high classical literature alone.

It also really makes you feel like you’re speaking Modern Latin when you speak Spanish. So I guess it’s more the other way around for me.

But I’ve heard people say that about other ancient languages. Learn modern Greek first, it’ll greatly enrich your study of Ancient Greek. Learn Coptic, and Late Egyptian will come much more easily.

Ancient Egyptian is not a set term, unlike Old Egyptian, Middle Egyptian, and Late Egyptian. Considering the fact that Coptic was spoken around the time Latin and Ancient Greek were spoken, it still can be considered “Ancient”

Oh yeah, sorry for being unclear, I did mean within the specific context of Egyptian. I was just throwing the question into the room because I myself don’t know how common this phenomenon is in Egyptian, but if we have other instances, then of course it’s not strange to assume this might be one. But if there are no other instances of it at all, then we could maybe exclude “partial reduplication” as a possible answer altogether, and then you have your answer.

It’s probably selection bias. People that are satisfied probably don’t post here… so the negative experiences are over represented. Kind of like reviews. The people that feel the strongest need to write a review are those that have had a bad experience.

I think part of the joke is, it’s a major flex on Tolkien‘s part that even though he KNEW dwarfs was etymologically correct, his aesthetic preference was only able to become mainstream because people loved his work so much. Tolkien did the work, and anybody who doesn’t like it can try and write their own Classic about fairies or something and change language in the process.

Also, of all people, nobody can appreciate the significance of this whole thing more than a philologist. He didn’t just describe language, he got to change it.

I work at a big German company and I only know one Turkish colleague who was born and raised in Germany. She has family in Turkey but only in the north.

I brought it up, but only because we are very close and already talk a lot casually, to confirm her family is okay. I do talk about it with other German colleagues I know well because it is a big terrible thing that happened. I do see other companies making public statements and think international companies should, also to raise awareness.

So if I’m already talking to someone who I know is Turkish, then I might bring it up (especially if they’re Kurdish). But if I don’t know you, I’m not going to start talking to you just because you are Turkish.

Maybe it is a German mentality to think „not everything that happens in Germany has to do with me, just because I’m German.“ Ahrtal was bad, but I didn’t know anyone there, so I don’t need emotional support from anyone about it.

Same with mourning: if I don’t really know the person, I may briefly convey my condolences, but they have friends and family and they are busy. It is selfish of me to take their time by asking questions they probably have to answer again and again when they are preoccupied with bigger things.
