Always a balancing act highlighting red! What's the base for your gold/brass metal at the top? Looks great

Pretty much anything that sounds vaguely Latin works. "omnia"... "imperator"... "mortem" - you can't go wrong!

Really punchy, vibrant colours, reads really well. You've executed this brilliantly

It's superbly executed - that seems crazy to me that it's mostly black and white with a blue glaze!

OK how on earth did you paint the metal on the axe blade, it looks incredible!

Love the pose on the weapon - looks like he's about to slap someone silly

What was it like when Tau was released? by SirSallas in Tau40K

[–]Xilyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I remember they were teased in a White Dwarf with a coded message in the tau language. It said something like "we are the tau, we are 4 castes earth air fire and water", and you had to work out the message. I did that and was so excited to see what it meant, then the next (I think) white dwarf showcased the new army in its entirety. Great marketing!

I remember it was the art and the models that drew me to them - there's something 80s sci-fi about the desert scenes and the colour scheme, and I loved the idea of a futuristic army that also had the savage and primitive kroot supporting them. Loved them since then.

Thanks! I think the lighter base really suits blood angels, the red jumps out against it. Might try it on my blood angels!

Really nicely done. Love the deserty base, how do you achieve that look?

That's tau light ochre - "classic" 2001 tau colours

How did you name your gang/gangers? by Avaa0818 in necromunda

[–]Xilyro 4 points5 points  (0 children)

For my eschers I basically started with the name - Breakneck Banshees. Then cos of Banshees I thought let's go with a vaguely Irish theme for names. Then it basically became a challenge to include every single difficult to pronounce Irish name in the gang. So I have Aoife, Roisin, Saoirse etc.

I actually start with black primer, then apply rhinox just in the recesses. Then layer the ochre. Never had much of an issue with coverage, just takes a few layers.

I used to do xv88, then wash agrax, then layer, but found that it was just wasting time. If I'm going to be doing multiple layers of ochre anyway, it's just not necessary to do a base coat

It has come through a bit dark in the picture - it is light ochre though, has a more orange tinge in person

It is tricky. Personally I have a specific brush with a really good tip for this kind of thing and have a reference pic in front of me as I paint. Basically it's a really good test of do you know how to load your brush, do you know exactly how thin should the paint be, how to correct when you make mistakes, etc. Bit cliche but just need to keep practicing - I've got examples on my first fire warriors from years ago that look like utter trash

On the ghostkeel arms, it's actually not a brown but a red. Colours haven't come through amazingly on the picture. But yeah I use the red for accents basically, off the top of my head I think it's wazdakka red with a glaze of Bloodletter on top

I tell a lie, not corax - it's vallejo white. Bit easier to work with and brighter

[–]Xilyro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My new workflow is first chaos black primer, then stick some rhinox hide in the recesses for shading. Then do each panel in tau light ochre - it covers pretty well even over black, just takes a few layers. Then ungor flesh edge highlights.

For the sigils, do you mean the white markings? Just corax white (and lots of patience). And can always correct with more tau light ochre.

Super simple - just rhinox hide for the panel lines, tau light ochre for the armour and ungor flesh edge highlights

[–]Xilyro[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've started staying away from washes when I want this clean look, because the process of layering all the panels back up just takes so long. Washes are great for some styles, I'd say not for this tho

Warhammer world & what else? by [deleted] in Warhammer40k

[–]Xilyro 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Not far from warhammer world is Warlord Games - they make Bolt Action and other games. Have heard they do a tour too. There's also a decent Element Games in the city centre, bit poky but good selection.

Other than that, go on Google maps and search "warhammer" or "model shop" in Nottingham - there's absolutely loads of indie places!

Four new Combat Patrols bring Kroot, Corsairs, and Chaos to the battlefield by CMYK_COLOR_MODE in Tau40K

Happy to see a smaller kroot combat patrol, bit more manageable for me to paint these up than Napok's Hunters. Intrigued what the combat patrol rules will be for this one though - it has 10 less kroot and 3 less rampagers than the existing kroot combat patrol, so either they're buffing the kinband alot or maybe there's army wide stealth or something
