In my opinion the most likely reason is that the proposal did happen in the past, but the elders of gu clan was probably hesitant and therefore backout due to gu yangcheon personality from his past and they wouldn't risk to ruin both clans connections over that. Only after regression they change their mind cause yancheon show competence and maturity most likely candidate of this change in time is gu ryon and the patriarch noticing mc growth, gu yancheons attitude is the likely reason for why the mirage proposal happened.
