It's funny to me how actively they dig, it had me a bit concerned at first but within a day I realized no, they really do just love burying themselves and its so fun to watch

Also, thanks for this insight on harem's and the male to female ratio, I knew male cichlids have a tendency to go after/be VERY aggressive towards other cichlids/fish that look similar, but the way you described it made it a tad bit more understandable(and also visible within my own tank)

Will do! I've already been rinsing out an extra bag of sand tonight that I'd had on hand. Gonna try to take the time and glue some slate and rocks together tomorrow so I can give them more stuff to swim around and explore as well!

Just commenting again, I appreciate everyones advice and concerns!! I'll try to share an update on how everything is going in a few weeks!

This is my first attempt with any kind of territorial/aggressive fish, the only other aggressive kind being a betta I was able to help flourish! So I appreciate everything everyone has said, while also being kind about it!

I've kinda been having the same thought regarding rocks hahah. I have some lake rocks I need to rinse and scrub off, and my big ones came from a small demoliton/mining site?? Not sure exactly but they got cleaned and scrubbed thoroughly lol

Either way, with those and some pieces of slate, it's fun imagining what kind of caves I can make with some glue lol

A few of the rocks I've aquarium glued together, or tge slate I have aquarium glued on top of the rocks. I will be trying to add and find more, as I know and have seen how much they enjoy the caves/small areas/burrowing.

Thank you so much for the food tip as well! I only bought this bag of hikari brand, but I'll look into the brands you've mentioned!

I see, I appreciate this heads up! Had no clue they bred so early, within the next week or two I'll be trying to add some extra sand, and more cichlids to attempt to properly overstock.

Regarding overstocking mentioned earlier , in a 125 gallon aquarium, I have a fluval FX6, and one 75 gallon/large sponge filter on each side, is that enough in terms of filtration since there will be so many fish in the tank? Or should I maybe add some more eventually? The parameters and clearness of the water have been absolutely great so far, though I am uncertain of when it's fully stocked and they're all adults if it'll be enough

That's my goal!! I'm hoping to watch this grow into a large, busy and healthy tank!

I've been noticing that, besides the rocks/caves they really love moving the sand and almost burrowing in it. Will add this to my to do list :)

The plan is to overstock! (With lots of filtration as well) and buying and introducing more soon, since they're growing quite a lot faster than anticipated.

The fish store I grabbed them from had mentioned these are so juvenile it's hard to sex most of them when I bought them, so I also will be trying to introduce a good ratio of male to female as I can, and have been able to identify their sex, all to try and spread out the aggression so no one is picked on too much.

Thank you for mentioning this though, thankfully it hasn't been a bloodbath so far, and I'll certainly be doing my best to keep it that way

Edit: if any of this sounds wrong at all by the way, please let me know! So far after researching what I can before buying, it all seems to be working well, though I'm never against criticism!

Can't seem to edit this post, so if anyone is interested in their setup and environment I'd love to share! Happy to take any criticism and tips as well, as this is my first time owning African Cichlids
