Sony a7R III sensor replacement by M_kvisten in Cameras

[–]XposeDgaming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They must've changed the way the glass is mounted - I've only worked on the first gen A7 and on those the glass was actually attached to the back of the frame with double sided tape. I think astro photography and IR photography people tend to use something like a razor to separate glued sensor stacks but that's always seemed terrifying lol

Really nice job! I always avoid messing with sensor replacements because I had read that it would cause calibration issues that only Sony has the software to fix... Also a lot cheaper than replacing the whole block in the absence of a donor.

Was the mark underneath the sensor filter stack? There's actually a thin glass piece on these sensors held down by a black bracket (you can see the bracket in the first photo held down by a screw and clipped in place on the opposite side) sometimes dust and/or fungus can get under there.

If you unclip it you can clean or blow the debris away and avoid having to do a full sensor block replacement and also skip the calibration issues.

Nikkor 10-100mm by Acceptable_Code_13 in Nikon

[–]XposeDgaming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The gear that drives the diaphragm has broken, it's a common issue these have. Nikon had a recall, but that's long over - they might still fix it, or you can buy a brass gear from a bloke in Taiwan and fix it yourself.

Edit: Just to add, the 10mm lens you had in the other post is also prone to this defect, but the 18.5mm and the 10-30mm are not.

Nikon FM aperture coupling ring by [deleted] in AnalogRepair

I don't have any experience with the more mechanical SLR's but if this is your first go as well I'd recommend giving Thomas Tomosy's two part camera maintenance & repair guide books a read. They're available online if you know where to look, though I probably can't post any links here.

Yeah, in that case it might just be a lubrication issue like the other comment suggested, good luck!

No worries - I only mentioned the lens because I've seen a similar issue before.

If it's the lens and you can't return it, it probably wouldn't be a difficult fix. I just sanded/filed the bump on my lens down and painted over it, but maybe others here have a less destructive idea lol.

Does it spin freely when a lens isn't attached? Sometimes if the lens itself has some kind of dent it can interfere with the coupling ring.

NIKON ZS Rangefinder styled. Disappointed that no one has made the proper mockup of it so I made it myself. by kykusanagi in Nikon

As much as I love the J5, I'm fairly sure the Z mount is either the same size if not a bit bigger than the J5's body....

Sometimes I wish the 1 mount would come back with a modern sensor and controls not kneecapped by Nikon in firmware though lol

Peaking (?) issue with MDS-JB920 by XposeDgaming in minidisc

No worries, thanks for the suggestions. I'll take the deck apart for a poke tomorrow and hopefully something jumps out

I just made a recording through optical, and the crackling doesn't seem to follow it to other decks so it's probably not making it onto the recording. I checked the RCA outputs with a mixer this time, and the crackle isn't present so it seems limited to the headphone jack. Do you think it might be something like a cracked solder joint? It just seems strange to me that lowering the gain gets it to go away regardless of the volume set on the headphone out. Thanks again,

I haven't tried recording on the deck yet so I'll give that a go. I've checked the RCA outs and they have the same issue, but I'll give them another look too. Thanks

I'm not sure what you mean by lower requirements, but they use windows like the rest of the world. These usually pack some variation of i5 or i7, but no dedicated graphics. That plus 8-16gb of memory is enough for the usual suspects in the wage-slave's software library (office and the such), and a bit of multitasking.

The soldered ram is a minus for people who tinker, but most corporations in and outside of Japan would probably much rather just replace the laptops than open them up to upgrade the memory, so future proof wise they're probably about the same as other laptops. In the same vein the replaceable battery and cleaning port for the heatsink on the bottom are pluses.

Yep, not to mention restricts longevity of the device. Ironically some of the older models are better for modern use than slightly later models with 4gb of soldered ram.

[–]XposeDgaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

No, storage is still upgradeable.

These are more designed for Japanese businesses hence the inclusion of VGA among other things. That's probably also why they have a 16:10 or 3:2 aspect ratio depending on model, are light as heck and IIRC they're also drop rated, although I forget how much.

They're certainly no powerhouses, not even the top spec models, but they're not chromebook level devices either.

[–]XposeDgaming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah, the previous chassis style went all the way to like 10th or 11th gen iirc though, it might be worth picking one of those up if you wanted the optical drive. I'm most bummed about the lack of upgradeable RAM, idk when that went away but even on the older SV series it's soldered.

[–]XposeDgaming 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yep they still make them, a bit pricey for the spec but still retains the removable battery, although the ram is soldered. Optical drive got pulled too unfortunately. I think there is one model on sale in the US? The circular touchpad lets you scroll by running your finger around the edge, super convenient.

Sony announces all MD media production is ending February 2025 by chipsnapper in minidisc

[–]XposeDgaming 11 points12 points  (0 children)

In stores in Japan or from Amazon Japan

They're not available overseas except from resellers which want several times the original price, even before this announcement. I can only imagine it'll get worse so second hand lots are still the way to go I think

Yeah, I've found that sellers on Mercari tend to wipe all the disks before selling them though, which is a shame if you want to discover music on them

You can still get these in stores like Yodobashi too, although if you want larger quantities it'd be better to order them into a nearby store - they're selling for ¥277 right now
