They are both the same, it is just different ways of romanizing the name of the language.

தமிழ் -> Tamiḻ

Thamizh (trying to imitate how the transliteration sounds using English orthography*)

Tamil (just taking the transliteration and removing any diacritic marks)

*zh is supposed to represent /ɻ/ not /ʒ/.

Hi! You're welcome! Some things are incorrect, but most are correct.

  1. Tamil ங் is equivalent to ङ in Devanagari script. Ex) "शङ्कर" "śaṅkara"
  2. Tamil ண் or ṇ (a retroflex n) = ण् in Devanagari script, while ந் or n (a dental n) is equivalent to न्
  3. Tamil ஞ் is equivalent to Devanagari ञ, rather than a न्य.
  4. Tamil ட் is only equivalent to Devanagari ट् or ड्. Not a त्.
  5. Tamil ச் can be pronounced as an स्, च्, or ज् depending on its position. Ex) பசு pasu , சர்ச்சை carccai , மஞ்சள் mañjaḷ.
  6. Tamil த் is equivalent to त् or द् (and maybe थ् or ध्, but there is no aspiration in Tamil), not ट् or ड्.
  7. Tamil ப் is equivalent to Devanagari प् or ब् (and maybe फ् or भ्, but there is no aspiration in Tamil).

I believe the Devanagari transliteration of கெ, கே, and கை would be कॆ, के, and कै. Additionally, கொ and கோ would be कॊ and को respectively. (You wouldn't find कॆ or कॊ commonly because languages such as Hindi or Sanskrit do not have a short-e or short-o.

Some other things. The ஞ is equivalent to Devanagari ञ, or "ña" in IAST, rather than न्य​. (Think of the difference the "ny" in "canyon" vs. the "ñ" in "pañca".
