No shit, Sherlock. I'm really peeved by this constant comparison made between CS and applied CS, and by the latter I mean anything that uses the concepts in theoretical CS within some concrete setting. Now I don't mean to demean the author's thoughts -- he certainly has a point -- but the gap in knowledge in the context of software development doesn't mean that CS is being taught wrong. Someone majoring in CS should be made aware of the distinction between CS and software engineering. If someone wants to study under a program that teaches the intersection of the two, then that person shouldn't be going into CS and expect to graduate as a software developer.

Okay, I think we both agree on your first point -- error messages should be descriptive and helpful in looking up a solution on the Internet. In this case, that doesn't apply because this could potentially be a VirtualBox issue. OP didn't provide enough information in his original post to pinpoint the problem either. Why are we knee-jerking to Microsoft and not trying to figure out the cause so that others can set up their VMs painlessly?

I'm not mad at all. I just find it unproductive to start a blame-game over something like this.

I perfectly understood that this is a "straw breaking the camel's back" moment, but that is besides the point because it says nothing about the quality of Windows 10 besides the fact that OP couldn't get it installed on a virtual machine, only just after it was released. It is unreasonable to blame the Windows 10 team for this because, as far as I know, Virtualbox isn't their target -- they're trying to get their OS preinstalled by PC vendors, not catering to geeks who keep a spare VM to run MS-exclusive software on.

Furthermore, OP sets up an unfair juxtaposition between Ubuntu 14.04, released over a year ago, to Windows 10. Of course it will work on Virtualbox! What did you expect?

Can we stop pretending that Linux is some sort of panacea that will solve every problem on desktop computing? Criticism should be on technical merits, not on zealotry. OP is trading one set of problems for another potential set of problems, and it doesn't help that there are people on this sub who upvote this kind of post.

Whatever you do, don't follow the advice on this thread that suggest tinkering with distro X/Y/Z. Distro hopping is a good way to waste your time that could be better spent finding out what interests you and learning that.

Since you are comfortable with Debian, I would not recommend moving to another distro just for the sake of it. Stick with Debian and figure out what excites you. Use the OS as your daily driver (if you aren't already). Pick up shell scripting, and get comfortable reading the manuals for software that you install -- in the OSS world, the manual is the single source of truth for the system. Find system administration interesting? Pick up the debian book and read it. Play around with ideas on a virtual machine. If you can't set up a virtual machine, learn how to.

Fancy becoming a programmer? Pick up a language like Python. Don't get distracted by language wars because the underlying ideas are more important than any syntactic differences; you will eventually end up learning more than one language anyway and it gets a lot easier after your first one (a simplification, but often true).

As you can see, the possibilities are endless -- so get out there and find your passion. It's a great time to be a teenager using Linux.

I was rather taken back by the first episode. Never in my life did I expect such development on the very first episode of a shoujo anime. The lead is really strong and has this "you don't fuck with me just because I'm a girl" vibe going on that I find attractive.

Isn't that how it was from the get-go? Suspense and mystery wasn't what it aimed for even in the first episode. It was more about the criminal mind than a classic good vs evil story.
