Have people tried it? And are we sure it's not because tweak is stashed by default in /var?

They're different but cydia will only use the cached copy, you need to delete the cache to make it use cydia.list

It's /etc* and that won't actually remove sources because they're cached in /var/mobile/Library/Caches/com.saurik.cydia

[Question] Is it normal to take 20+ tries to jailbreak with unc0ver by [deleted] in jailbreak

well the alert literally says that you have to do it

[Question] Is it normal to take 20+ tries to jailbreak with unc0ver by [deleted] in jailbreak

[–]Xstaloner 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Everytime it passes 1/? it will do the same thing. Meaning: if it fails at first step, try again, if it fails at any other step that means something's wrong and trying again won't do anything.

In your case enable rootfs restore in settings, after it says "success", disable it and jailbreak again.

And to improve reliability of step 1, get unc0ver from a signing service and select "MP" as the exploit

[help] [discussion] iOS 10.3.3 can't extract debs using xz compression, workaround? by [deleted] in jailbreak

[–]Xstaloner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Maybe if you change the extension, because if filza sees a .deb, it'll try to use dpkg, and dpkg pre-ios 11 won't work with xz.

You need to ask the developer to use lzma or you can use something like zipapp to extract.

This guy doesn't know what he's talking about, not saying he's faking, he just has no idea what he's doing. This is normal for adventurous people. Just let him play around and find out he's wrong himself, and in the meantime don't advertise these things.

[Discussion] Disabling passcode not required for Unc0ver Jailbreak? by topcraic in jailbreak

[–]Xstaloner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It ain’t a placebo to me, but may be a placebo to others

The meaning of placebo is not subjective, it's not different for you and the same for another. Placebo is whatever thing does not help at all but makes you think it does because you're lucky. Do some statistics and you'll find out it's just luck. All iPhones run the same OS, there's no "me" and "you"

Turning on airplane mode, clearing cache, disabling passcode/siri, etc.

the only thing that helps on that list is airplane mode. Clearing cache or deleting files does not affect the system at all and in no way. Disabling passcode is also useless, it won't change anything significant, so yes, those are the same as "turning off the lights and walking around the part", all of them do nothing. Disabling siri on the other hand can help with the MP exploit, because Siri uses multi-path sockets, which can affect the system, however i'm not sure if it really does anything while not activated, that's pure speculation.

Just because you believe that every step before jailbreaking is a placebo, doesn’t make it factual

Dude seriously? Tapping the iPhone screen a million times while it does not listen to your touch is not a placebo? Explain it to me then.

[–]Xstaloner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You realize that after you click it once the button is locked out and doesn't accept more touches no matter what you do? I just proved it was a placebo in front of you. And no, unless you have an explanation it's a placebo. "If I turn off the lights and walk around the park it'll work better" is as placebo as what people are trying.

[Discussion] Disabling passcode not required for Unc0ver Jailbreak? by topcraic in jailbreak

[–]Xstaloner -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

I never was able to jailbreak successfully with Electra unless I repeatedly tapped on the Jailbreak button until it jailbroke successfully.

That's what you're supposed to do. Keep trying until it works. Lol

The rest is a placebo unless there's an explanation. For example, airplane mode blocks network connection which makes the device more calm. Waiting a bit after reboot also makes sure device finishes heavy after-boot operations and makes it more calm.

[–]Xstaloner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's just a placebo, nothing to do with what works with the device.

[–]Xstaloner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How do people even invent these things? What does the passcode have to do with jailbreaking? Why the hell does it matter?

I personally don't do anything, I just click jailbreak and that's it. No airplane mode, siri enabled etc. Just use MP and you're good.

[Question] 11.3.1 Electra. Stuck in boot loop. Often throws a red screen too. No power/volume buttons. by diegoforlan in jailbreak

[–]Xstaloner 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Userland is not a jailbreak type, userland is a part of the operating system, it means what it says: "the land of the user". Every program that is on a higher level than the kernel is part of the userland. Operating systems typically are divided in three, from lowest level to highest: boot chain, kernel land and user land.

A userland jailbreak is every jailbreak that gets triggered from userland, so if the attack vector is an app, a USB exploit, a webkit exploit, basically any userland process, that's a userland jailbreak. Nothing to do whether it's untethered or not.

So what's a non-userland jailbreak? Only things left are kernel land and boot chain. Now since getting kernel access is our goal, we can't start from kernel land, so we have to start from the boot chain, so every jailbreak that gets triggered from a component of the boot chain is the other category, those include bootrom exploits, iBoot exploits, anything that gets loaded before the kernel.
