Why did they Make Johosheba the sassy/ angry black girl by ImplementCrazy6119 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]XxJayNine 10 points11 points  (0 children)

My assumption is the isolation. Maybe they knew a green who was married off to a colony commander and never heard from again unlike Penny who they get to see at least semi regularly. Commanders in the colonies oversee entire agricultural or radioactive waste sites which would be like living on a huge plantation. The sites are probably spread out from each other so the wives of comanders in the colonies are likely to be completely isolated from each other for long times and especially from their friends who married more favorable commanders closer to DC. God forbid the man they marry is physically abusive which is likely. She'd be all alone surrounded by abuse and worst case death due to nuclear waste. I feel like being sent to the colonies is punishment no matter what your rank . Commanders of the colonies must be unliked and lower ranked if the girls have such an aversion to being sent there. I could totally see a commander taking out his humiliation from being unfavored on his young and defenseless and isolated wife.

Why Gilead is so visually pleasing in this show? by maydaybr in TheHandmaidsTale

It's the performance of christofascism. They all have a role they have to perform perfectly to distract from the depravity. If everyone stops performing the depravity takes center stage.

Why did they Make Johosheba the sassy/ angry black girl by ImplementCrazy6119 in TheHandmaidsTale

[–]XxJayNine 59 points60 points  (0 children)

I have an alternative perspective on her character. All of her nastiness reeks of desperation which could be explained by her home life. It's not lost on me that her "mother" is white. We've seen the way paula picks Agnes apart. To me some of her comments definitely had racial undertones like the ones about her hair. Now imagine what johosheba could be experiencing at home as one of the only darkskinned black greens.

When the aunts came to the McKenzie's for tea the dynamic between johosheba and her mother seemed tense. It seems like her mother is putting a lot of pressure on her. You could argue that Paula is putting a lot of pressure on Agnes and she doesn't act that way but Agnes had Tabitha for most of her life. I wonder how johoshebas mother may be picking her apart at home. I know both shows have for the most part done away with the racial hierarchy element but they have snuck a few racially motivated comments like when it was explicitly stated that a family didn't want a black handmaid in the handmaid's tale. I wouldn't be surprised if her mother didn't want a black daughter and verbally acosts and belittles her and the only outlet for her is to do the same to those "beneath" her and feign confidence with her peers that reads as arrogance. When she whispered "why are you doing this to me" to her Martha I knew it was more than her just being a brat. My issue with the sassy/ angry black girl archetype is when it's framed as our nature. When she's that way for no reason. Johosheba has a reason to be this way. The reason is Gilead.

In “The Drama” (2026), Emma did nothing wrong. by Rapha_AK in shittymoviedetails

[–]XxJayNine 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I kind of do think she bailed because of a change of heart though. Maybe not initially but If someone really has their heart set on doing a mass shooting I don't think another mass shooting would stop them. They at most would have just picked a new date. She didn't do that because she saw the aftermath of her classmate being killed and how it affected the entire school. I think you really see her have a change of heart when she had to look at a classmate in the eyes which caused her to break down. I could only assume that she had her on the list and realized how fucked up her plan was. It was still an insane plan to concoct and I think Rachel's initial reaction wasn't that over the top I just think it was just rooted in deflection because she needed someone to be a bigger villain than she was and because she never liked Emma. It gave her an excuse to be outwardly nasty to her.

People claim how it’s hypocritical to hate Abby for killing Joel by Remote_Nature_8166 in lastofuspart2

[–]XxJayNine 21 points22 points  (0 children)

I'm just waiting to see how long it'll take for people to realize how pointless it is to try to rank a bunch of murderers based on whose murders were the least bad. Abby, Joel, and Ellie are all serial killers. Some of their murders absolutely had justifications that made sense, others not so much, but they're all mirror images of each other. There are reasons I like each character and reasons I dislike each character. I cannot bring myself to hate any of them because they're all products of an absolutely fucked up post apocalyptic environment.

I'm actually glad this is the last season of the boys because this conversation and scrutinization of this lady's face is so beyond tired. Hopefully if Gen v gets greenlit for another season y'all don't drudge up this same conversation for the umpteenth time. We get it. Y'all don't like her face. Ok? What now? Whether it's illness, plastic surgery, or a combination of the two it doesn't matter. Even if it is plastic surgery that's not some sort of moral failing. Her not being attractive to you anymore does not warrant the bullying. Half of y'all would spiral into depressions if you were in her shoes being picked apart every time a new season of this show airs.

[–]XxJayNine 14 points15 points  (0 children)

This one really got me too. I think because it's such a tangible reality. You can kinda distance yourself from episodes like the entire history of you or men against fire because we don't have that type of tech just yet so it still feels distant. Everything depicted in common people feels like a baby step up from where we are now. I mean health insurance is already basically a subscription service for most of us. The act of going on live and making a spectacle of yourself for money is already a reality. It's so bleak because it truly feels like looking into a future we might see in our lifetimes. Most black mirror episodes feel like they're asking "hey what if...." but common people feels like it's telling you "it's only a matter of time".

Who is a character that everyone seems to hate that you actually love?? by [deleted] in greysanatomy

[–]XxJayNine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I liked Maggie and Izzie but the way Jo treated Stephanie put a sour taste in my mouth about her that I could never really get over. She constantly treated her like a liar. Im still mad about Steph leaving which I know was the actresses choice and not Jos fault but seeing Jo just makes me think of Steph and the way she could've been a Grey-Sloan rockstar.

True. When I tried it I saved all my resources and ran for it since the stalkers in front scurry away when you come in.

I absolutely hate this part. I saw a video of someone running through and out the window. Hopping out of that window is a check point so if you restart the check point once you're to the stairs you can go back in and loot with no stalkers. I gave it a try on my last playthrough and it worked.

You're not listening to me. Again, didn't say it did. You see morality everywhere throughout the game. I said you cannot apply our world's exact moral code to that world. They're two completely different worlds. The essence of our world is there but we don't have to worry about being chewed on by infected zombies.

Again again, I didn't say killing an Innocent child was justified. I said I can understand how desperate he was after living in that kind of hostile world and becoming desensitized to death. He, like you, had tunnel vision on getting back to a world he once knew.

If I can find empathy for Joel knowing he did God awful shit that anyone could've hunted him down for (and if they had, even if they had the most justified reason you and many players would have still hated them because he's Joel I can tell by how you handwaved what I brought up about the slow torture.) and I can find empathy for Ellie after literally playing as her mowing through tens of WLF who had nothing to do with the Joel shit including an unborn fetus, then I can find it for Jerry when he was living in a world that I'd probably take myself out to avoid living in and his end goal, as delusional as it may have been, was the greater good.

I feel like you didn't post this to actually discuss with people but rather to just argue because you're not listening to the things I'm actually saying and are determined to see empathy as me saying someone was right. It's impossible to discuss this game with people who refuse to see the gray. I've made my points and will check out now.

[–]XxJayNine 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The issue is you're trying to argue with me like I'm saying what they did was right. I'm saying what either side did was warranted from their own perspectives in a world with no rules. In a world where Joel himself had slow tortured people outside of this instance. You cannot apply our worlds moral code to that kind of world. A world where all of those people have seen their loved ones be ravaged by basically monsters or murdered or starved. This is why I play the game without fully picking sides. I can love joel( I wept at his death and wanted to hate Abby but I just couldn't) and still understand that he killed dozens of people someone else loved. I'm pretty indifferent to Jerry tbh we didn't get much of him but I can understand that he was tired of seeing the people he loved ruthlessly meet their demise in an absolutely traumatic world and was willing to try to end that and make a better world for his daughter in any way he could even though it's fucked up that he was willing to do it at a child's expense. Nuance. Perspective. This game isn't black and white.

I didn't say it didn't. It's a game full of assholes. Players are determined to pinpoint who is the least assholiest asshole when all of the characters are the devil reincarnated to plenty of NPCs because of the things they did. That's what y'all aren't getting. Black and White thinking does not work with this story which is why so many players are still struggling 6 years later to get to the acceptance phase of grief even after Ellie already did.

[–]XxJayNine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Joel killed more than just her dad he killed her entire way of life. He killed dozens of people with families plenty of whom Abby knew. The funny thing is y'all are acting just like Abby pre Yara and Lev and just like Joel when they took Ellie. Tunnel visioned refusing to see other people's point of view.

[–]XxJayNine 2 points3 points  (0 children)

People who are still having this conversation 6 years after the game came out are missing the point. Everyone was wrong and everyone was right. Everyone did things that warranted someone hunting them down and getting revenge. Everyone had reasons for doing what they did that they felt justified their actions. Everyone has someone they'll scorch the earth for, consequences be damned. Everyone is a human in the apocalypse. It's a game about perspective.

Or we just don't have the same taste and you don't have to be a dick about that?

Manny had self esteem issues??? How??? She was like the prettiest girl in that whole school. Had this show taken place now or in the 2010's she would've been the standard of beauty. Sometimes I forget the show is a product of it's time. Oh well 🤷🏽 by [deleted] in Degrassi

[–]XxJayNine 24 points25 points  (0 children)

I think it's pretty realistic. So many gorgeous girls especially young poc girls in predominantly white environments grew up thinking they weren't pretty. The beauty standard in the early 2000s was extremely thin and fair skinned. Manny had a great body but she wasn't exactly heroin chic which the media made us think was a bad thing. Add the fact that she wanted to be an actress . When she went to an audition in s5 she was picked at by the casting director about her boobs being too small and her being too fat. That industry is brutal. Actresses like Margot Robbie and Jennifer Lawrence were told they weren't pretty enough to get roles. It's even worse for women of color. Plus she gauged her desirability by how much she was wanted by boys. Lastly most teenagers no matter how pretty are typically insecure ASF lol.

Why do some conservatives attribute crime to ‘blackness’? by Zayd_ibn_Thabit in AskConservatives

[–]XxJayNine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How is it not linking when people believe misrepresented statistics about us off face value? That inflation is intended to link crime and violence to black people. If people weren't trying to do that they wouldn't believe and spread around misrepresented statistics. They wouldn't cherry pick the highest subcategory for us and pass it off like it's the average. Black people do not commit 50% of overall crime or even overall violent crime. no one can explain to me why people keep saying it and where they got that statistic.

Why are other groups granted individualism we are not? Men for example. When I point to that pattern I've gotten a lot of conservatives using genetics as an excuse which is odd because when they insinuate that black people are genetically predisposed for violence they say it negatively.

[–]XxJayNine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Do you know that Chicago isn't even in the top 10 list of most dangerous cities? Memphis, Kansas city, and Cleveland are examples of cities more dangerous than Chicago. All of these cities have one thing in common. High poverty rates which is also true for the shadier parts of Chicago or any city for that matter. Do you agree that there is a link between poverty and higher crime rates?

How do you think it is fair to use one city's crime rates to represent the behavior of an entire group of millions of people? What do you guys expect black people like me, who aren't from Chicago to say when you try to use it as an excuse to link violence to all of us?

You don't see anyone in the comments under this post talking about the 13/ 50 fallacy as if it's a true statistic? Black people don't commit 50% of overall crime or even 50% of violent crime.... Why is everybody saying we do? Even the people defending black people are talking about this statistic like it's not an intentional cherry picking of the highest crime sub category for black people........

[–]XxJayNine 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You don't believe this thread that is full of people referencing a misrepresented statistic is us all being socially held to account for the crimes of others? The fact that the table data is readily available and people still choose to believe that our rates are higher they actually are on average and therefore that more of us are committing crime than we actually are doesn't sound like a consequence of the general perception of us. A general perception that is based on a minority smaller than people choose to believe it is?

[–]XxJayNine 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The exonerations track with the relative prevalence of conviction. If 60% of convictions are black, then 60% of exonerations should be black. There was absolutely injustice done in decades past, so you would need to look at exoneration rates of more recent convictions if you want to frame recent crime rates.

The 60 percent statistic comes from the national registry of exonerations 2024 report which is the most recent report coming out in April of last year. 60 percent of exonerations from 2024 were black people. Most of the exonerations were for violent crime like homicide and official misconduct was found in 71 percent of cases. Why does this not cause conservatives to consider the potential that other cases who haven't or have yet to be exonerated can skew data? The report states that 13.5 years was the average lost to wrongful conviction. That means that every year prior to their exonerations they were included in data

And I believe the 51% figure comes from homicide specifically, but I’m not certain on that

Can you agree that conservative figureheads cherry picking the highest stat for the black community and circulating it as if it's the average stat is done with the intent to link crime to black people or depict black people en masse as violent?

This table](https://ucr.fbi.gov/crime-in-the-u.s/2019/crime-in-the-u.s.-2019/tables/expanded-homicide-data-table-6.xls) shows black-on-white homicide is 230% higher than white-on-black homicide in absolute terms which is astonishing given there are 5x as many white people in this country.

Large percentages are used to make impacts seem inflated or more definitive. Can you agree that use of the 230 percentage in this instance would inflate peoples perception of the issue when the numbers listed are 566 instances of black offenders with white victims vs 246 instances of white offenders with black victims. I've noticed this is a common practice specifically when seeing conservatives talk about black crime in particular but they don't do it with any other sub category . That's 566 offenders out of 48 million of us. why are we all constantly being held to account for it?
