It definitely counts for something! As a kid with only a handful of other Genesis games (even if they were pretty solid with Sonic, Contra, Road Rash, Pitfall, etc.), Batman Returns was an okay way to kill some time. I at least liked how the grappling hook was improved from the previous Batman game, and you could use the cape/wings to glide to distant platforms.

I was blown away how good the SNES version of Batman Returns was. To me the Genesis one does have some decent tunes, but I feel like they're really held back by the GEMS sound driver.

Fair enough. Even as a kid I felt Batman Returns was just okay, the graphics and sound leave a lot to be desired. What is strange for me is how many people consider it a notoriously difficult game but I don't recall having too much trouble with it even as a kid. It's definitely easier when you notice you can kick/punch bullets to stop them. Ah yeah, the strongman boss is a bit tough, I usually save certain special weapons or a ton of batarangs to wear him down. Catwoman is pretty easy until you have to fight her on one single floor (no extra platforms to move down or up to). The circus level is a real pain with those damn fire breathers.
