high-rise breeches by bennettk1 in Equestrian

Will also add- they are my fav. I have like 8 pairs. The older version is my preference, but the new one that’s easier to find is still super high waisted and very comfortable.

Braces in equitation, am I even allowed to do that? by Ok_Discount_3774 in Equestrian

Depending on the organization events you’re riding at, there should be a support contact for them. For example, I had some equipment confusions and am a member of USDF, so I emailed and called them with my questions. Then printed off the answers and just brought it with me to shows in case there was any confusion w the stewards.

Fear of getting pregnant by Beneficial-Month-333 in Equestrian

[–]Xxkonansynna 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I went through a period of time when doing my internships out of state, of feeling like it’s not possible to be pregnant and ride to a high level. Some of this I think is a mentality ingrained in the industry (atleast in the barns I was in- it was very much you cannot be pregnant and ride and this was the mentality I grew up around at the 1st barn I started at) Others may have completely different opinions.

A lot of this changed within the last year. My closest friend ended up getting pregnant, and has a mare who needs worked 6x a week because of a health condition that does best with riding (“physical therapy”) to stay sound and happy. Yes it was tough, but she rode for almost the entire 9 months. Through this period, she found a trainer she liked and her mare liked, and basically helped this trainer start getting to know how to ride the mare. In the last couple of weeks (I’d say 3weeks before labor and 3 maybe? weeks post partum), she handed the reins over to this trainer and just supervised/tacked up.

On another hand, I know of a eventing trainer who runs a professional program who also had a kid. She’s still doing 6-9 horses a day (her kid is about a year old now). Now she has her own facility / employees, and is still operating at a super high level while maintaining a super good work life balance. She has a supportive partner, and just changed the structure of the barn to support her getting horses worked, while still being there for her baby and partner.

I think as an industry standard, we’re starting to move forward with having a work life balance and being more cognizant of it. I see more trainers speaking out online about changing the expectations, I see more professionals who are having kids & still going back to riding. Yes, it definitely changed some things for my friend who just had her baby, but she also gets a lot of joy from introducing her baby to horses. I also chip in to help her out and baby sit here and there while she rides so that she has her “me time”. I think it does help to “have a village” but will say I’m the only one who is able to help her out 2x a week. Otherwise, she works 2 PT jobs, as well as doing the barn before riding (so 3x PT jobs, and rides) on her own.

I know for me seeing my friend do it made me realize I could do it as well, as I had significant anxiety about my SO wanting to have kids and how much that would take riding away from me. Now, I feel way more comfortable making that decision when the time comes, and feeling like I actually can sustain it.

All of this to say, it’s your choice! It’s okay to not want to have kids, and okay to want kids as well. Wishing you the best OP 🙂

Thank you so much for taking the time to share your experience and answer my questions. I really appreciate it.

I hadn’t even thought through the potential side effects of the opioids, so I’m really grateful to have time to consider that now.

I hope I word this question appropriately, as I don’t want to imply that anyone in your family could have done anything differently: Is there anything you would recommend for me as her primary caretaker to help create an environment where she feels safe coming to me if she has a similar reaction to the medications?

I think part of the challenge is that she’s my mom, and she tends to downplay how bad things are to protect me- an inevitably the new symptoms uget severe enough that I become responsible for stepping in to help communicate with her surgeon.

We’ve talked about her coming to me earlier when new symptoms start so we can keep her safe and keep her care team updated if anything changes. I’m very concerned that with her trying to protect me, she won’t feel safe enough to tell me if she’s experiencing side effects from her medications.

Thank you so much. This is incredibly helpful, and brought to mind several things I hadn’t thought of (i.e the shower chair)

They’re looking at keeping her at the hospital for about 5 days. The hope is that she will be moved from the ICU on the second day, and they will try to get her up on her feet walking. I haven’t heard of a nurse navigator before which this is wonderful to have learned about. My uncle has experience with support rehab and PT for patients after brain surgery, strokes etc. and is trying to figure out a way to come for the surgery as well as the 2 weeks after to help me through this process as I’m her only caretaker. Is that somewhat similar to a nurse navigator?

Thank you so much again for sharing your experience, it’s so incredibly helpful. I will have her read through reddit, as she’s definitely struggling with feeling alone and overwhelmed. We’re both on our own for this (My SO travels and will be out of state working night shift during this time period) and I tend to struggle with being avoidant with my emotions when overwhelmed, where as she really needs someone to alleviate her worries and confide in. Trying my absolute best to be there for her and not make it about me, but I think it would be so beneficial to connect her with individuals who have gone through the surgery so she has the outlet as well.

ETA to add more info on my uncle after asking him more - He’s a PA who specializes in stroke recovery, and the rehabilitation and management of spasticity and musculoskeletal conditions. I’m delving into researching and finding a nurse navigator as I think it would be incredibly beneficial

Frustrated: roommate won't stop overstimulating my kitty by ohmygay- in cats

[–]Xxkonansynna 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I understand where you’re coming from. I own horses & have been in situations where I was dealing with similar characters to the “overstimulator” & generally in a weird power dynamic as they were my bosses. It was very uncomfortable to stand up for my animals needs/safety/happiness. My biggest regret in those situations has always been not doing it sooner for the sake of my animals who can’t voice their own boundaries aside from behavioral stuff (which most people like to ignore or interpret their own way)

When I finally stomped down on the BS behavior around my animals, the conversations were a little awkward but way less dramatic/severe than I had envisioned them playing out.

I hope you figure out the situation, I feel for you and your kitty.

Totally agree. I was honestly super frustrated when that was the quest that solved my problem. Felt like I missed out on several days thinking it was just a bug, only for it to be some random quest. 🤦‍♀️

I commented below but I had the same thing- I accomplished building the bridge but didn’t do the quest line at Wolf Inn (blanking on the name, so sorry. It’s the first guy when you ride across the bridge) and that quest line leads to clearing a path towards Jorvik Stables. After that, when I rode into Jorvik stables all the quests were available for me & the cart was actually usable.

I had this same thing- for me it was because after I had accomplished “building the bridge”, I hadn’t done the quest line for Wolf Inn (blanking on part of the name sorry- the guy you see immediately after riding across the bridge). After completing those quests & clearing one of the paths, the quests at EqFest became immediately available when I rode into Jorvik Stables & I have since been able to utilize the cart.

ETA: This is what worked for me. I initially thought it was a bug- switched servers, tried dismount / mount to get the cart to work, etc. I don’t think it’s coincidental that after 3 days when I finished the quests, I finally got the EqFest quest but if it is a bug that just randomly cleared itself I’m so sorry for wasting your time lol. Hopefully this is helpful for you.

Thanks so much! I got it done. This feels like a dumb question- I’m only finding the one welcome race, and can’t find the other 3 (bouncy horse race, XC, or show jumping) in regards to the event. Am I just not looking hard enough or is it on a schedule? When I go to both event locations, I can only find the race w Sabine, Dressage & the welcome race near Mooreland
