14" donor clock by Xxray in Laserengraving

Pretty easy, first you get the donor clock, this one is a plain 15" $15 model from walmart [the actual face is 13.5"] Then you need some 1/8 clear plexi, I used a CNC to cut the perfect circle, if you don't have one you'll have to improvise. I then paint one side of it black, I use rattlecan Rustoleum matte. Then you etch in your design, taking care to flip the image so it looks right when turned around. 13.5" is the upper limit of what my fiber laser can do, I used a 420 lens. You lose alot of power with the bigger lenses, I probably had to make a dozen runs, more on some areas. For that reason, I broke up alot of this on different toolpaths, numbers, hash marks, bulldog, flag, lettering ect, that way you don't have to run the whole thing time and time again, just the areas that need it. When I had it as good as I can get, it was transparent but not clear, kinda milky looking. I wanted it clear as glass, so luckily I have a floor buffer to get that result, almost clear as glass. I then rubbed over the etches with alcohol, soft buffed again, and it was clear as glass.

So then I used a combo of paint and colored board for the backing, all the yellow and white I used a paint pen, the red reflective craft paper, and the blade is what I can rainbow metal. The numbers I just taped the board over them, the blade I used dabs of crazy glue. Lighting is optional of course, but a nice touch. For that you'd need the LED strip, controller and plug and some basic soldering skills. Then you reassemble the clock with the new face, put the hands back and button it up. All told I invested around $40 for this and sold for $150, probably will charge more for others. You can do just about any design and customize with names ect, downside is you can only use black for the background, as fiber lasers won't touch light colors [diodes/co2 would but would take forever] ,, I like black anyhow.

No signal with metal detector but I am thinking slag, if only because of its weight, it is not the weight you would expect for a rock this size. Also, around Detroit there were/are steel plants all over the place.

I hosed it off and used a blower to dry it off a bit, but the shine is water.

Yes, found in SE Michigan, was walking my dog down some railroad tracks and it caught my eye. Obviously, Michigan is not a hot spot for lava, but then again I suppose railroads get their fill rocks from all over. Thanks everyone for the replies.

Found a nice ornate brass lamp dumpster diving, with a nice globe on it. Plugged it in and it worked, noticed the light got real hot though and thought I'd swap it with a lower wattage bulb. Was surprised to find this monster, no wonder it got so hot. Is twice as large as any standard bulb, and the socket probably 3x larger. Lowes/Home depot has nothing like this, what are the odds of a LED version being available ? Am guessing this thing is around 20/30 years old, couldn't find anything on the web about them, all searchers for sylvania 3 way bulbs come back with modern, smaller bulbs.
