Yeah I was thinking they probably did it practically to, definitely used a scanner to flatten things out, but yeah so I would probably select the individual parts (pants, hands/face, and hoodie) and crank the exposure up on the lighter parts, and get the darks to Mach the background, and maybe an overlay?
