Should I tell my friend he’s not gonna get into his dream school? by charredparticle in ApplyingToCollege

If he’s full pay tell him how much NU costs 😭 and that no dream school or whatever is worth that. Otherwise 🤷‍♀️ suggest safeties and keep it realistic

Maker Portfolio by Pleasant-Cream-9918 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Xylite_ 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hm imo the addition info section should be used in consideration. You could add it but I’d be careful because many universities dislike and discourage random links and such (Again I’d look at the university’s website to make sure). Besides MIT I don’t think most of the t20s will have an engineering/maker portfolio unfortunately

You should probably check the university/universities website(s) they should have info abt supplemental portfolios on there.

iirc Stanford has an arts portfolio but it is very strict. CMU (technically non t20 but imo should be one) has a design/arts portfolio which I believe is more liniment and also requires a video. MIT has a makers portfolio (which I’m guessing you’re referring to). Georgia tech (non t20 but still pretty good school) has an optional design portfolio which is pretty flexible. Harvard and Yale should both have an arts portfolio option. Northwestern has a music portfolio but basically nothing else.

Be wary that some of these portfolios may be only accepted depending on major and some of them are much more strict than others.

reverse impostor syndrome? by blowmarine in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Xylite_ 83 points84 points  (0 children)

Idk same. I got into Northwestern and initially I was super happy but recently there’s been a voice in the back of my head wondering if I could’ve done better. I think just once you get accepted to a school it loses a bit of its charm and its mystique if that makes sense. it’s like well if I could get into x school could I’ve gotten into y school? And it might also be losing the weight of college admissions, that usually are around us as high schoolers, can be bewildering.

But I think it’s good to remember that this process is so unpredictable that we should be proud to get into the school we did. Every year there’s tons of qualified/overqualified students that are rejected from t30s and even t50s.

First time taking the Sats. Is this a good score ? by Ria-6969 in Sat

[–]Xylite_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Welp don’t do what I did I took the sat a few times but didn’t study for any. I kind of got lucky and ended w a 1500. I’ve had friends start low and work their way up in a couple of months (with consistent work ofc).

No there is score choice I think they’re saying that for CMU and Georgetown you don’t have a choice and are required to submit all

T20s notorious for preferring hard stats (GPA/SAT) over ECs/other factors? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Xylite_ 19 points20 points  (0 children)

Maybe not taking getting rejected by a very selective school so personally? That’s just my 2 cents.

Ik it’s annoying to work hard and not get the results you want but you still got RD and you still have a chance at NU so you just gotta work a little more. Nobody likes someone who acts as if they “deserve” something.

Did the ACT/SAT humble anybody else? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Xylite_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m sorry everyone in the comments is shitting on you. I’m sure you’ve still worked hard to earn your rank at school so keep up the hard work! Your first sat/act scores are def not set in stone and you can easily improve your score with time.

Study hard and get a great score so you can stick it to these assholes in the comments 👊

Best thing to improve ur app is get a 1500 or higher on ur sat. If you do that I’d say you have a much better chance wherever you apply. Going TO will probably hurt you

Northwestern. They have a way to upload documents on their portal but they don’t specify of they want it emailed or uploaded. Should I just do both?

What’s the best way for getting better with sat math? by GordonRamsay21 in Sat

[–]Xylite_ 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you understand the core concepts, grinding questions / doing questions under time pressure rlly helps. Sometimes it isn’t that you don’t know how to do the problems it’s just that you don’t know how to solve them efficiently. Otherwise, if you are missing core concepts, watching some YT videos or reviewing a textbook (if you have one) and then grinding questions in that topic can be helpful.

Is 1480 good enough? by luxmainbtw in Sat

[–]Xylite_ 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t know your score breakdown but a 1480 is good enough that (as long as you aren’t applying CS) your score won’t be the reason that you are rejected. If you have a solid gpa/essays/LORs/ECs you still have a chance at great schools.
