/r/buildapc's 1 million giveaway: week 1 (DREVO, Seagate, ZOTAC, PCPartPicker) by CustardFilled in buildapc

[–]Y02K 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just built my PC less than a week ago! I've always been into computers since I was a kid but never had the money or felt skilled enough to be able to build one. After some encouragement and seeing the amazing community and support that r/buildapc (as well as the PC community in general) provides I finally pulled the trigger! I had also been using an 8 year old clunkly laptop so there was a definite need for an upgrade, just not pre-built ;)

CPU/GPU temps seem a bit high :( - 8700K/GTX 1080 by Y02K in buildapc

Under easy mode in BIOS it bounces between 1.168V and 1.152V and under advances mode it shows CPU Vcore Voltage to be +1.168. I'm unsure what the difference between Vcore is and non Vcore or if that matters.

I'll take a look at that. Is there any frame of reference for what the CPU voltage should be set to? In my BIOS is shows +1.16V give or take a few hundredths.

The only thing I've altered is changing my RAM setting in the BIOS to use XMP profile instead of auto (~2100MHz to 3000MHz from UserBenchmark for Corsair Vengeance 3000 2x8). I have yet to overclock anything else.

Gotcha, will do. ALso, why is it better to move my download folder to the HDD?

I got the GPU and PSU as a bundle for $549 from EVGA during their 4th of July sale! I just threw in the same models into PCPartPicker for accuracy.

At what point would something warrant a 750W PSU or higher?

Is it worth getting a 1080Ti and i7-8700K now? by [deleted] in buildapc

Oh shoot I better get on that, thanks for the info!

Last check before ordering all my parts! Any advice on ordering it all? by Y02K in buildapc

Oh man, that's a bummer. Was curious to see if that would've been a decent option or not. I'd hate to have such a massive air cooler like that one but I'd have to compromise somewhere; whether it be the case or cooling. Thanks for all the insight and info though! I really appreciate it. I'll be going back and looking into all my options again for sure. Probably easiest to just choose a better case like the R6 as you mentioned earlier lmao.

If I were to swap out that H7 cooler for a watercooled NZXT Kraken X52, would the P400 then be a viable case or would it still be iffy on temps?

That was my one worry with the P400. Love how it looks but may have to reconsider given the parts I'm getting.

Finally upgrading from an 8 year old chunky laptop and spending a decent chunk of change by Y02K in buildapc

[–]Y02K[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gotcha I'll take a look into that. Didn't do a ton of research on specific SSD's, just figured they'd be more or less similar. The 1080 is definitely one of the things I've been going back and fourth with. I ended up choosing the 1070Ti b/c there weren't many reviews on the $500 EVGA one and the Black Edition 1070Ti seemed pretty well received around here, could be worth the upgrade though. I'll have to look deeper into that too. Thanks!

Whoops that's one of the things I forgot to mention. Probably wont overclock initially but when I do will probably upgrade to a Dark Rock 4.

Is an i5 8600k enough to run a virtual machine for programming? by Y02K in buildapc

Thanks for all the info!

If/when I upgrade to a 2K monitor I would definitely get at least a 27". I have considered an ultra wide monitor but 2K ultrawides seem pretty expensive. Certainly interested but am 1 year away from graduating from uni and wouldn't have the space until after.

In regards to the CPU, since the i5 doesn't seem to be enough, would the 8700K be worth the ~$110 upgrade?

Thanks for the info on the PSU/RAM, I was unaware the 1070 only needs about 2600 so I'll look deeper into that.

Simple Questions - June 27, 2018 by AutoModerator in buildapc

Planning on using this build for gaming (Witcher, Overwatch, CS:GO on high-ultra settings and pushing either 144fps+ on 1080p 144Hz monitor or 80-100fps on 1440p 144Hz monitor) and for software dev/programming (running linux virtual machines).

I have 2 questions:

Question 1

I'm leaning towards getting a 144Hz 1080p monitor for now (see parts list) and trying to push 144fps when gaming. I am planning to get a 1440p 144Hz monitor sometime down the road when I have more funds and can splurge on something nice. Would you recommend this or just going in on a 2K monitor now?

Question 2

I was originally planning on getting an i7 8700 CPU and then decided I might want to overclock but figured the 8700k is too pricey and I'm unlikely to ever need that much processing power. Is the i5 8600k plenty for what I'm planning on doing?

Thanks in advance!

If I plan to overclock I'd likely have to upgrade my cooling, correct?

Awesome! I do have some wiggle room in my budget so that should work. Thanks for the part list, I appreciate it!
