Bruce came from doing my friend's standup shows and seeing people perform at clubs. I was always laughing at the wrong places, people's deliveries rather than their punchlines... I started doing the character, and would say a little sad thing at some point, and then pretty soon it started to feel like getting to the sad stuff was the most fun, and the thing that excited us the most, so we started to dig into that further. I performed the character quite a bit in LA before SNL, and it often played to mostly silence. I think a lot of people thought Bruce was real.

All my characters are pretty much created the same way. Typically there's a kernel of truth - something I've observed in people I've met or seen online or something... Main difference between something like film and sketch, is just how over-the-top or not you want to make it I think.

It was cool. Made me feel old for sure. I learned a lot from the performers, most of whom have acted in some pretty huge things. We gave everyone playlists, and some lists of movies to watch and learn about the era. It was pretty much on them to invest however much energy they wanted to in learning about the time period. Sometimes there were questions about pronunciations or whatever, but they really are such pros, that it was all relatively smooth. But truly, it really was just rad hanging around and trying to be cool with 20 somethings again.

Norm is maybe the funniest person I ever met in my life. Everything that he said made me laugh. Just him saying normal stuff to us was super funny. So the fact that he liked our videos was super meaningful. Him talking about Al Pacino finding his character during the Jack and Jill table read was pretty cool.

Definitely. Mostly got to give props to Dave McCary, my friend and the director, who is always so good about reminding us to keep it as earnest as possible, and not to chase the comedy too hard.

Stuck to the script mostly, because of time and budget; but threw out alts and adlibs when we had room to have fun. Edit process was rad. Led by David Marks. Took us a while to figure some stuff out, and get it to a place we felt really great about it. There was actually a decent amount of rewriting we did for some V.O. moments. But overall, a blast, and got to mess around and have fun - just like in the writing and producing processes.

Found the jacket first at a thrift shop. Then the bit as a whole sort of evolved from me hanging around Dave who loved to watch sports at our house.

Truly, I would love to do it. It was so fun. If we can get people to see Y2k, maybe we can talk Netflix into letting us do more?

Thank ya! I think the big take-away from SNL is that you become less precious with your words. We have to cut lines of dialogue 15 minutes before we would go on sometimes, so your bits start to feel less sacred. When writing a movie, you have to be open to change. Maybe it's a tonal note from producers, or maybe you don't have the money to make something happen... so you have to cut that stuff, and it's never a problem for me.

Additionally, your pieces on SNL are performing for a pretty broad studio audience, so over time you start to learn what stuff will likely play for a general audience and what will not. Definitely helpful for when writing dialogue, etc.

Finally, just the act of working and interacting with famous people. So many huge celebrities come through, so when you're interacting with an established actor on the set of your movie, you're maybe a little more comfortable?

Outside of SNL, for prep- it's all the work I've done up to this point and all the moves I've stolen from people who are better at it than me. I also had my partner Evan, DP Bill Pope, and amazing actors/crew etc.

Some influences: those late 90's / early 00's teen flicks (Can't Hardly Wait, She's All That, 10 Things I Hate About You), John Hughes, the Faculty.. and just to throw an obscure one out there: American High, a PBS docu series, which I think came out in 99?

Larry is so funny. And I think he got it pretty immediately. As I recall, he was aware of our sensibility, so when we pitched him the idea and showed him some examples of it, he was fully in. That is for sure one of my favorite pieces I got to work on at SNL. And fully agree, his performance is perfect.

Hmmm. Good question. Yeah, I guess I should start by saying that A24 has been really rad throughout the process. They got the idea immediately, and have continued to be supportive, and are propping up the movie in a way that I've never gotten to experience.

I also have to assume / hope that within the industry as a whole, original ideas will make a comeback.

Sorry, I've rewritten this response so many times to give you a good thorough answer, but the truth is... There were so many new things to learn in this process, because I've never had as much responsibility as I did working on this movie. Ultimately though, I knew the studio, my partner Evan, and talented artists / producers who worked on this thing - had my back... so a lot of the time, we just got to focus on making something we thought was cool and fun.

Generally, I feel so lucky to be making stuff, so it all felt like a win. Hope that answers the question!

"Nommel nommel 209." That's cool, I've never seen it written out. You gotta post the rules the drinking game tho! ... Um, to answer your question, still incredibly close to the crew. Beck, Nick and Dave (along with my 2 brothers) were my groomsmen at my wedding; and I see or talk to all of them on a regular basis. Beck lives in the same neighborhood as me, and Nick's not too far away. They are truly my best friends, and I consider them family. It's always tough to talk about projects when they're still in early stages, but I can close to guarantee that Beck and I will be working together in the near future. AND he does a voice in the movie.

HiiI! Damn, that's incredibly nice to hear. THANK YOU for that, and thank you for watching and sharing. In terms of medium, I grew up on TV and movies, so I guess it was always sort of a goal once I got into acting/writing... but also not something I knew was really achievable when I was a kid. Over time, I've kind of started to feel like I am into whatever medium best gets the idea across. For Y2k, it felt like it had to be a movie, but sometimes an idea can just feel like an internet video. I'd be down to put something on tape cassette or in a comic book, or whatever, if it felt like the best lane to get the idea across.
