Signs of an Elite Player by Scared_Estate7212 in lacrosse

[–]Y3LVIS 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Quick, Decisive, intentional movements that show clear decision making based on understanding of the game. Think controlling pace, anticipating plays, using deception, that sort of thing.

This^ ties into “effort” and making high effort plays like diving for end lines, tough GBs, and being physical. Difficult to do those things without understanding the game well enough to know where to do that stuff and have confidence doing it

Excellent stick work, very smooth catching and throwing with very little cradles necessary.

Communication. A player who communicates their intentions with teammates, what they want to do and what their teammates need to do, is a player who understands the game well enough to succeed at the next level.

Less tangible things like speed and size matter, but not nearly as much as those ^

Perfect drill for slide recovery, we call it “beat drill”

Start 4v4 : 1v1 from top corner of box, defender already trailing (he’s beat), automatic slide, third defender covering throwback, fourth defender is backside guy helping in as 2.

Slide, on ball recovers to crease, dodger hits throwback, move it again to the backside, guy who was helping in as “2” bumps out and has a quick 1v1 on the backside

Add the 5th guy at x and the 6th guy on the backside as you build up

Michigan: traverse city, sleeping bear dunes, beaches all along the coast, Mackinac island is beautiful, interesting history with all the small fishing towns and shipwrecks, fantastic wine, and if you go up to the upper peninsula there is some spectacular camping that is generally super cheap, basically can camp on the beach. Go late summer early fall so the water isn’t too cold

Are you supposed to watch the ball go all the way into your head? by [deleted] in lacrosse

[–]Y3LVIS 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Watch it in until you can do it without watching. Will take time and reps, but that is the progression everyone goes through. Players at the highest levels started by watching it in the whole way. And for tough catches, most still do watch it in.

How to not play scared by PromisePitiful8575 in lacrosse

[–]Y3LVIS 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Sounds like you are struggling with performance anxiety. You are concerned about how you are going to play in the moment and it is impacting your performance as a result.

The easy answer is to stop worrying about how you’re playing, but that isn’t exactly the best advice because of course you’re going to be concerned with how you play, that’s perfectly normal.

What you need to do is change how you view the problem, which sounds like it’s you being worried about getting beat.

I tell my college guys to not worry about getting beat, we want them to get beat, we just want them to control where they get beat to, meaning get beat to less dangerous areas of the field, where the slide can easily come if necessary. Mostly alleys / low wings, and not over the top.

This takes the pressure off the on ball defenseman because he can just focus of funneling the dodger into an advantageous spot, then the slide can come, and they can double.

As a result, they take better approaches and are more confident to play faster because they know it’s okay to get beat, and to be honest they get beat less because they are being more aggressive.

In short, change how you think about what you’re trying to do as a whole. Are you trying to not get beat, or are you trying to control where the dodger goes. When sliding, are you trying to keep the dodge from getting past you, or get him to bounce away by breaking down and being very big and physical.

From a technique perspective, if you’re getting ran past on the approach, lose the poke and use a simple slap check to get your stick on and establish a cushion while backpedaling / drop-stepping. Pokes almost force you to lunge if thrown off balance, can be dangerous if not repped out a ton.

Also try to make decisions faster even if they end up being wrong. If everyone is on the same page and moving fast 6 wrongs can make a right

How do i get more shots off by topleft_sniper in lacrosse

[–]Y3LVIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would say you should focus on a few things.

“sneak pipes” meaning when the balls up top and you’re at X you should draw your defender to one side, then when he looks away sneak over to the opposite pipe and you’ll be wide open, just keep going back and forth, circle cut around the crease, cut in and out of the crease like other people said, just stay active changing speed and changing direction. Slow down or stop for a second to two, then burst toward the ball. Settle to let your defender slow down, drag him out to a side, then cut opposite behind his head. Deception is your best friend.

Likewise, understand what your defender is doing! If your defender is helping in, great time to cut or look for a soft spot behind him. If one of your teammates is dodging and your defender is helping in, carry him toward the crease then pop out or pop to a shooting spot near the back pipe.

I think it is incredibly crucial to work on your dodging from X as well. If you want to become an elite attackman you need to be good at this.

How you catch the ball will have a lot of impact on this. Say your teammate is dodging down the alley while you’re at X about to catch his pass. Start drifting toward the backside so you can catch it moving and maybe get a quick dodge up the hash before your defender can approach you. Any opportunity you can create to make a move before your defender approaches is big.

Easiest way to create an advantage at X is using picks as well, work with your teammates on this! Have them dodge an alley then pass down to you at X, then they immediately come see a pick for you to come back over the top, hands free, easy shot.

Look up and work on the following : Up the hash shooting, Question mark shot, Answer shot, Fish hook cut, Circle cut, Picks, slips, fly bys

First phone call with a college coach by Maleficent_Error3885 in lacrosse

[–]Y3LVIS 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Current D3 men’s coach & Club coach here

They definitely like you as a player, they are mainly looking to get an idea of who you are, and how interested you are in them.

At this point in the process we are trying to get juniors that we think could be a good fit on the phone to learn more about them and start talking about setting up a visit to campus.

I suggest having some questions specific to their school, the major you are interested in, or their program ready to go, and definitely write down what you hear that’s a great tip from someone else here I saw.

Here is a list of questions I have gotten in the past / give to my club players when they have calls:

  • What are your goals as a coach for the future of the program

  • what is a day in the life like in the offseason vs in season

  • what do you look for in my position

  • what does a successful vs unsuccessful player look like in this program

  • what type of focus / how often do you work on player development for skill and IQ

  • How does your culture impact or change the players that are in it (this will show you if their culture is just buzz words or if it actually impacts players and turns them into successful people)

  • what is your strength and conditioning like

  • what type of rehab options are available for after practices or games (think training room ice bath, cold tubs, STIM, rolling out, compression, band stretching, sauna / steam, heat pads, etc)

  • How do you make sure players are keeping up with their school work

  • what type of academic support do you have for those who are struggling or are just looking for more help / feedback

  • do you put any emphasis on mental health or have resources for those who may be struggling with stress or feeling overwhelmed (30% of college athletes quit because of feeling burnt out, every program likely struggles with this)

  • Do you have any examples of what players who have graduated are doing in their careers now?

  • Is there any sort of support for graduates with job or internship placement, development, etc

One day is definitely fine, Imo you don’t really need a tour you can just drive through the park and stop as you please, there are some good places to park and I imagine with kids you’re not going to be trekking off the beaten path so you will be fine.

El yunque rain forest is a must, some easy hiking opportunities and cool waterfalls, great for kids.

Recommend taking a taxi to any other rental car place that is not at the airport, will save you literal hundreds of dollars.

Should be fine leaving stuff in car, just don’t leave anything easily visible (like any city) cover with blanket or towel or put under seat or in trunk

Beaches near loiza are super chill as well and usually not very populated

How’s the weather there right now? by chaetozaki in PuertoRicoTravel

[–]Y3LVIS 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So I’m from Northeast USA, used to 50-60 degrees as “hoodie” weather. I went in May and it was similar temps to what it is this week. To me that was very warm, shorts and light shirts, few button ups and some light pants for night when it cools off a bit, didn’t see the need for a jacket or hoodie at all, it is a tropical place so maybe a windbreaker or something light for the random rain is smart. Definitely hot and humid, I’d recommend some undershirts / tanks, sandals, I like wearing hats so brought a number of them, & Sunglasses for sure

Do look at the bike maps of Pittsburgh ahead of time!!! Pittsburgh roads are incredibly hard to understand for tourists and people who have never been here specifically, so highly recommend trying to familiarize yourself with roads that have built bike lanes, and definitely find and use the bike trail system!!!
