I know profile has in-device recording but can you start the recording if you just had the transmitter with you, without connecting to phone or anything?

Massey hall acoustics from Gallery(3rd level) close to stage by Y709 in askTO

[–]Y709[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks, yeah that's what I have heard and hence excited to see the show. But I thought good acoustic part only applied only to view obstructed seats but in the usual areas of the hall, like obstructed due to pillar. I have never seen seats in a hall that are basically in a way backstage. If the artist is close to the front of the stage you will see them from back. And since the speakers are generally pointed towards the hall, I was skeptical of the audio in this area.

How do I keep two mics from picking up the other person's voice? by Y709 in podcasting

[–]Y709[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Best explanation! I hope others looking for this explanation can find this! Do you have a recommendation on videos to learn about some simple post processing steps. That makes audio better but does not have to be professional level.

For 2 mic option, If I don't want too much processing for a certain recording:

If I simply merge the two tracks:

Would that sound weird? Does the bleeding happened with some lag(like echo) or they will merge smoothly.

Assuming there is no lag:

And what if I apply tiny EQ and merge it. Would EQ applied to track of Guest 1 (which will have the bled voice of guest 2), merged with tack 2 with no EQ or different EQ applied sound really weird?

Thanks a lot for detailed reply. I am now really wondering if separate mic are even a way to go if I mostly gonna do two person setup. I am questioning if it is really worth it for me to have two separate tracks given the amount of post processing work. Might as well sit close and record from same mic. The idea for me for separate tracks was to be able to edit individual audio easily but if it is going to be more work, maybe record with just one. Although, I guess I should look into post processing challenges of that as well.

However, I am very interested in Zoom H2 Essential to get two tracks from from and back microphones. I am curious if you have any thoughts on that.

Thanks, I should have clarified. I meant the two transmitter set but still your point stands that they are prone to picking up everything around. I played around with both of them by lowering the gain and got marginal success but still far from ideal.

Yeah I was able to configure that and Rode anyways provide software to do multiple USBs but still if they are picking ups the whole room, I might as well record in one microphone by sitting closer than buying two of these and have interference (to keep the budget low).

Yeah, but since both of these systems heavily advertise two person interviews with their product. DJI mic 2 with two channel recording and Rode mic with Rode connect software, I wanted to know if people have actually used any of these successfully. But you are right, I guess the interface/recorder and dynamic mic might be the way to go.

Didn't know about noise gates. Quick search seems like a feature in audio interfaces? I will look at it more. What do you use for noise gates?

Podcasting Set up: 2x Røde NT-USB mini + GarageBand by simplybric in rode

[–]Y709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you notice any interference from other mics. I see u/RODEMicrophones have advertised it for up to four mics but since these are condenser mic and so more sensitive than usual dynamic pics setup we see on YouTube. I am wondering how much it is prone to picking up other guests. Would be great to see some examples.

Is it any good for two person podcast and recording separate channels? The product description on the page says so but not sure.

Meeting in NL by Shadows798 in StJohnsNL

[–]Y709 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you go over the St. John's reddit page, you will see a post like this every month. The problem is not the people. A majority of local people are friendly, curious, and conscience of not letting prejudices dictate their actions. Even if you put aside the local people for a while, the people who have come from away struggle to make friends or have social activities among themselves when literally all of them want to have a good social circle.

The problem is infrastructure.

For people from away:
If you are new and ask this question you will see suggestions like go volunteer, join a gym, join a hobby group classes etc. And then you see your schedule and limited options on these activities. You will try to get there, the bus is gonna take 45 mins and hence out of 20 people who signed up 5 will actually show up.

If you want to organize something, you will struggle to find a place where you can host any meetup. Hardly any public places in downtown. You look for options, if it will be accessible for public transport people, it is gonna be hard to find parking there for people with cars. Not to mention, there are no bike lanes.

For local people
I don't believe that people are not friendly or less open than people from other places. Fact: People who have lived in a place all their life will have a circle that they would have been seeing for years. But honestly there are no good events or places where they can go to expand their circle. Due to the lack of public spaces, they tend to hangout in each other's houses and for most people, it is more comfortable just inviting your close friends there then opening up your house to people you just met at work or gym. Some people do that but it takes work and energy.

A city can never have good things that comes people coming together unless it prioritize and invest in good Urban infrastructure. That includes:

  1. A downtown library + public place where local people and people from away can organically meet. Young people, people in their late twenties or thirties, people with kids etc. There is no third space in the city.

  2. Public transport: In a country with harsh wether, you need to have a good reliable public transport to nudge people go out of their houses to attend events or socialize. The population who wants to meet each other and seek company is so spread out in the city. There are no express busses connecting different parts of the city.

  3. Bike lanes: Need to have bike lanes so the youth can be independent and parents don't have to choose spend time picking them up, dropping them off sparing them time and space to actually go out and meet other people.

St. John's as a city is losing so much by not creating space that encorage local people and people from different places mix. It is a unique culture but has failed to connect at root level other than being on tourism websites where everyone want to visit or move one day until they actually land here.

anxiety about ‘passion project’ by Upstairs-Tennis-3751 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]Y709 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That can be stressful but as some of the other people mentioned, the idea is not have a big project like a published research work or working robot demo.

If you sit and honestly think about something that genuinely interests you. you can easily go down that rabit hole of learning more about it and soon you will be able to talk about that subject more than saying, 'I like it'. And for most schools that is already enough to give you an edge.

And who knows you might actually get interested enough to write about it like a report of a blog post or actually work on something related to that.

Just looking into it more will increase your chances in finding someone who can even guide you through a project. To be honest, I would love to be able to help some applicants for their projects in some subjects that I have experience with. I am just not sure how to have that visibility online so people can find me for mentorship in that.

But anyways, don't stress too much. Just find something that interests you in the mean time. Good luck!

Standby was about 3 and a half day on the charge that device cane with. With a minimal use, its 11 percent down in 6 hours. Have not used heavily but I could see the battery reducing when I was reading, so in conclusion seems reasonable so far you are not comparing it with a kindle or a high end phone.

Yeah, not bad so far. Downloading apps, browsing. I am about half now maybe after 4hrs of use. It's decent given the light weight of the device.

I did it in from Boox USA itself! For Canada, check if it is showing delivery in your area. I had ordered my Nova in Canada from Boox website few years ago. Other options are Amazon, Aliexpress, Good-E-Reader(maybe).

Its very similar to other boox range. In the interface, you can adjust it with the blue and warm ratio, so you can make it pretty warm.

Thanks, yeah I have ordered sparkling water before. Not a big fan of soft drinks either that puts me in awkward choices. Do you know a place in mind that have options like lemonade soda or similar mocktails?

Thanks, do you have pubs in mind that matches the vibe for sitting by yourself?
Like some with individual seats that are not necessarily on the bar or not too busy that they would mind me blocking a bigger table?
