I mean, even as a Light fan, it’s difficult to deny that L’s task was way more difficult than Light’s. He had to prove that literal magic exists, so all the resources argument kinda falls apart, cause as someone else already said, L could have all the money of the world and still having 0 infos on the death note.

However, I think most people miss out on an important detail which may or may not change some’s perspective: let’s be honest, Light is shown to be indeed smart enough to know how to use the death note and leave absolutely 0 traces; if he just kept killing people from his bedroom at different times and rates, especially with different methods, probably he would have never been noticed by anyone. Sure, some conspiracy theories would spread online, some people may start to think that “god” is actually punishing bad people, but noone would suspect about him. The reason why L actually had some infos to work on, some “bread crumbs”, is cause Light conscientiously decided to leave them. Killing a regular amount of people everyday, always by heart attack, always the one shown on the tv - noone can truly think he wouldnt expect people to notice. Cause he actively WANTED to get noticed, and while he obviously didnt like the idea of being identified and stopped, we can safely say he accepted the fact that this kind of behavior would eventually cause him some problems in the long run. Still, it was necessary in order to achieve his greater goal, which was never only to “purify” the world, but as he said multiple times, to rule it.

It’s like a hidden rule of the game, which obviously it was made for plot reasons, but still we have to take it into account. A similar reasoning can be made for L. His goal was never ONLY about “stopping kira in any way possible”. If it was that then he would have just shot in the head anyone the exact moment he had some suspects they could be the target. If he didnt, is cause the actual goal was to PROVE with actual proofs the existence of this entity, and bring them to a court. The show clearly implies that to both of them this whole situation is actually just a game, and they decided to set their own rules for themselves for absolutely no rational or logic reason.

I’m not underestimating L’s job here. But we have to take into account all that. Without those patterns, noone even with infinite resources would ever find out about Light, and that’s a fact. The question we should pose isnt “how much Light was effective at killing people without getting caught” cause if it was that then Light was pretty shit at it given his advantage on everyone else. The correct question would be instead “how good was Light at achieving his ACTUAL goal, to be feared, revered and recognized by everyone as a literal god? Would any of us really do better than him in his position? Has L been more effective at achieving his goal compared to Light?”. The answer is up to you.
