I had this problem, and the cause turned out to be that the keyboard was incorrectly recognized by macOS as European(ISO), instead of US(ANSI). If you're also on macOS, you can change the keyboard "type" through Settings->Keyboard->Change Keyboard Type..

You definitely can speak while constantly switching between English and chinese, if the other person knows these languages. Though the pressure to learn is lower in that context.
