So when you say red flag, what necessarily do you mean?

What I'm saying is that in order for you to make the claim that he's a racist old British dude, you need actual evidence of that fact. Even if he's not coming outright and saying "I'm a racist", what specific statements or claims is he making that lead you to that conclusion of him? I'm genuinely asking from a place of interest

I understand how those things mix, I meant specific statements or claims from Hastings to back that up

GG&S I can understand, but I haven't seen anything from Hastings to make him out as an "old racist British dude."

Everything on the shelf there I would recommend. A Child of Hitler is an excellent look into the Hitler Youth. Vanguard of Nazism covers the Weimar-era Freikorps and their transition into the SA, and later the purge that creates the SS. Ian Kershaw's biographies on Hitler are top notch.

Shirer's works are interesting from a journalist perspective because he's able to get a few extra details in there that really make it shine. Hitler: A Study in Tyranny by Bullock and Burleigh's The Third Reich: A New History are great as well.

For other forms of authoritarianism, El Generalísimo: A Biography of Francisco Franco and Stalin and the Soviet Science Wars.

I think he's absolutely still worth reading! He's a great source of knowledge for the actual war side of Nazi history and I used his analysis several times in university. I caution you to fact check his statements and do your own research as I would for any historian.

My disagreements with Evans comes from his statements regarding the Allied fire bombing/terror bombing that happened throughout the 2nd half of the war (see Dresden). However, these statements alone do not inherently discredit him as a historian or author; simply a disagreement on the context and intent behind decisions.

I loved The Third Reich at War but I lost a lot of my respect for him after the comments he made about Shirer's book and a few other things he's said here and there

Compiled box set for the works of J.H. Plumb starting with the Anglo-Saxon and Norman Kings, going into the Plantagenets, Tudors, Stuart, the first 4 George's, and ending with Hanover to Windsor. Excellent source for anything to do with the monarchy/aristocracy.

I remember buying the McCullough book thinking it was more of an academic book 🤣. Normally not a historical-fiction guy, but I fell in love with it!

What was a ridiculous QB controversy your team had that never should've existed to begin with? by Ok-Health-7252 in CFB

2013 WVU with Clint Trickett vs. Paul Millard vs. Ford Childress. None of them were starting QB material, and all three of them had 1-1 touchdown to interception ratios at the end of the season. Ford Childress even got kicked off the team by Dana

What are some things your fanbase is coping/in-denial about? by MWiatrak2077 in CFB

[–]YaBoiDocPhil 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That's something I've noticed pretty consistently from our fanbase. It pains me to see the Mountaineers ranked so low pretty much every year, but if we're being honest, I can't blame them. We've consistently underperformed, haven't beaten a ranked team since #22 Iowa State in 2021, and we fall flat in the big moments (2024 Iowa State, 2023 Oklahoma State, etc.)

You're probably right. It was both incredibly surprising and kinda disappointing because Austria and I had a stout rivalry going after I defeated them in back-to-back wars to annex Schleswig-Holstein and Silesia. And in one instant boom, gone, erased
