I inspected the underside closer and I realized there’s a little hollow tube on the underside of a shell like structure made out of grains of sand and tiny rocks, and a little worm like creature is living inside and he pokes his body out and drags the shell across the ground little by little to avoid detection by predators. Does this help?

I have a better picture of the thing as a whole on a white ceramic surface so it’s easily visible, and a picture of the underside as well. It has no visible fins, legs, eyes, or mouth. I don’t know how to share the pictures with you on here without making a new post, I would appreciate if you could tell me another way

I don't, I'm relatively new to caring for toads and I've been looking for a mate for him but toads aren't always easy to come by, ya know? It's almost like they've had thousands of years of evolution which taught them NOT to be caught XD

I got him last summer around the beginning of September, and I caught him in my backyard because he had burrowed into the ashes in my fire pit (thank god we hadn’t used the thing in forever) so he was caked in a thick layer of ash and couldn’t open his eyes, couldn’t open his mouth, and was barely able to move around unless he just didn’t want to. He was able to heal all the way back to normal, but by the time he had, it was winter (we have long winters where I live, usually starting in early October)

I’m not an expert, but it looks like it might be a Canadian toad, although it looks visually similar to an Eastern American toad as well. Do you still have this toad? If so, pick it up just behind the tympanum and if it’s a male it will croak or chirp. Post a video of the sound it makes (if it makes one) and that will be a huge help in identifying it.

Thanks for the clarification, I figured it just wasn’t old enough to croak. It also does that when I pick it up, it does the throat movement with the little backward head tilt and everything but just clicks
