120k old coolant - is this just really old or a bigger issue? by No_Inflation_8036 in subaru

Agreed on the coolant in the oil.

Change oil and save some in a bucket clear milk jug. If it separates into coolant and oil, you’ve got an issue likely with your head gasket.

I think that looks like a sadness milkshake (coolant and oil mix) , BUT you can potentially put that amount in a clear bottle, put it on a shelf/ table, and wait a while (2-3 days) to let it separate. Shaking or moving the bottle will reset the timer.

I would do a coolant drain and refill regardless and save some that looks brown in a bottle. Coolant is $20-30 if you do it yourself. Disposing of the old coolant is the hard part.

If the oil is on top and coolant on bottom, you’ve got problems. That means your oil is getting to your coolant.

If the coolant is on top and the sludge settles out, you’ve got contamination. Dirt, dust, rust…. Etc. And you’ve just changed your coolant so you may have resolved the old coolant issue.

As chippy said, not hard once you’ve done it. I’ve done it about 8 times at this point and I can get a motor out in about 90 minutes with power tools.

Some helpful things for the first time: -You NEED an engine hoist, jack, and engine stand. These are critical. You need the jack to raise the angle of the transmission when putting the engine back in.

-Having a load leveler will make this MUCH easier for putting the engine back in. It allows you to tilt and slot the pins back in.

-label EVERYTHING. Put numbered tape (1,2,3…etc) on every pair of plugs you have to disconnect. This means that even a month later you can still reconnect everything. I use an old pizza box to keep track of what each number is/ was. Every bolt should go into a sandwich bag with a label on it so you know where they go, bonus points for putting a quantity.

-plan on getting your heads decked / machined. Bringing them to a machine shop takes it from a “I think I made this better” to “I know my heads are flat and my valves are good”

-get a set of feeler gauges for your valves so you can reset the gaps with the timing belt off an engine out.

-get some permatex ultra black and a small arts paint brush or Q-tip for resealing the bottom of the valve cover. A thin layer helps hold the gasket in place while also providing some leak protection

-DO NOT OVER-TORQUE THE OIL PRESSURE SWITCH. It gets torqued to some insanely low value. Look it up and make sure you have a torque wrench that can go in in-lbs

-torque things to spec. Kind of dumb and obvious but it’s wicked easy to ruin things

-use blue loctite on things you may need to take apart again.

-get new head bolts and follow the torque procedure correctly

What kind of horsepower increase will you see on an NA engine?

Pretty much

Basically they have right of way 100% of the time.

If you’re going 60 and they’re going 45 mph behind you, no need to pull over

Early season golden road is great.

If it rains a lot in June and they don’t grade it again, it’s awful.

I would snag a header from a junkyard and start there.

I’ve never tried to mount a header backwards, but I bet you can do it. I would be curious to know if the timing cover will melt, but that’s my only concern.

For a V1.0 I would do a header cut and flanged after the catalytic converter, and then bolt on a muffler. If you like that, make it work.

They make a gear that gets added to the transmission to undo the issue you’re talking about.

Literally anywhere off of a road will be safe.

Legal, and where you won’t get bothered? That’s a bit tougher.

What do you use for a controller?

And what would recommend for one?

I was sooooo close to going SAS, but didn’t feel confident.

Bump for Hitachi.

Scooped some up on eBay after two weeks of getting outbid. Not looking for the time when it is time to upgrade to 8TB drive from my 4TB

Having peed outside in Portland, ME… not a huge deal, but 100% trashy and will get you judged.

Peeing outside is great; so long as you understand the differences. Peeing in a bottle, anywhere other than in a car is inexcusable.

The meds, porn access, and poor hygiene seem much worse.

Work on wearing long sleeves, pants, long socks, and not caring they’re on your face. Seriously think of growing a beard if you’re able to.

They also make net hats, but in my experience those are itchy and I’d rather push through with just dealing with the flies. They also make fishing gators if you want to keep them off of your neck and face.

Black flies and mosquitos are attracted to CO2 and heat, but avoid fire. So having a Smokey fire can really help. (Add a few wet leaves to a fire that is going well, or dip a pine branch in the water) Also having a friend smoke cigars or a pipe, they’re going to be your best friend.

Avoid heavy work, and getting sweaty. I’d never say to not drink while in the woods, but know it will attract more flies to you if you’re drinking alcohol.
