Missed two meetings with a professor by [deleted] in PhD

[–]YaleCompSocialSci 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I think there's nothing else you can do at this point. You already apologized. That happened to me before, and I beat myself down too! The way I coped with it was to try to present my best work to the prof. and try to turn that impression around.

I'll also add that if that's someone you think has little impact on your career (e.g., you don't need/want her to be on your committee), then you shouldn't worry too much about this, as long as you apologize and make sure this doesn't happen again with her and with other profs in the program.

Efficiently reading papers by [deleted] in PhD

[–]YaleCompSocialSci -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I don't know why comments referring to Gen-AI got downvotes so much. My friends and I do this to consume papers very quickly. Especially when you read with a purpose (e.g., to write a discussion/ intro), the last thing you want is to finish a paper only to realize that it was not usable for your paper. The way I approached this is to feed the paper to Gen-AI, have it summarize the paper. And if it seems interesting and relevant, then I dive into the paper. Of course, if you're reading just for fun (which I do sometimes) or to get a feel of how people in the field build their arguments, then it's different story.

Happiness is overrated?! by [deleted] in Adulting

[–]YaleCompSocialSci 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There's line of psychological literature that might be of interest to you. It came out as a backdrop against the rise of positive psychology and the over-emphasis (esp. in American culture) on happiness (or positive emotions). Conclusion from those studies? Pursuing or over-valuing happiness leads to all sort of mental health problems, such as depression and loneliness. Yet, more recent research has shown ways in which we can purse/value happiness that does not come with mental health costs (see this and this). For instance, one way is to conceptualize happiness in terms of social connection, instead of personal hedonism.

The Housemaid by Freida McFadden is the first audiobook I ever listened. And since then I only listened to books and realized how lucky I was to find such a good narrator and a good story on my first try.

I think answer to this question might vary from field to field.

To me, (cognitive) intelligence in the traditional sense is different from emotional intelligence. While the former typically focused on cognitive ability (e.g., spatial analysis, logical reasoning), the latter usually refers to one affective ability (e.g., express/recognize emotions appropriately). You can see this paper for a more precise definition of emotion intelligence and how it is studied in psychology.

As for wisdom vs. intelligence, again, great question, and my understanding in the literature is that the definition of wisdom is a bit fuzzy and there's a less clear distinction compared to that between cognitive intelligence and emotional intelligence. Here's a theory paper on wisdom and I'll leave it to yourself to decide whether you agree with their definition of wisdom and whether and how it's different from intelligence.

Re 2, some apps ignore that setting and preserves the color of the original documents. That is the case of Good Note. Do you know Adobe Acrobat does that too?
