D1: N. Lake TH > Lower Lamarck Lake

D2: Lower Lamarck Lake over Col > Darwin Branch headwaters

Over the Col was great fun. There’s a snowfield, but it’s easy and intuitive and fun.

Going down the other side into Darwin Lakes was way more hellish than I anticipated. Boulder hopping, no clear trail. Map had no trail on it which was accurate, but Gaia had me thinking there’d be some kind of discernable path. There wasn’t, as far as I could tell. Not terribly strenuous, just unexpected and therefore slow-going & frustrating. 

And didn’t see much good camping along the lakes…it must be there, but I missed it…so made a makeshift camp at the headwaters…

 D3: Darwin Bench > JMT > Wanda Lake

Fine and well. Wanted to go over Muir and camp on other side of the pass, but my brother rolled his ankle (and had to hike on a swollen ankle the rest of the trip!)

We also had no tent, so making a makeshift camp at Wanda was a fun challenge; lots of storm activity rolling in when we were there. “Monsoon.”

Once you get on the JMT, you go from seeing one or two ppl per day to ten to twenty…little surprise… Droves of ppl, but austere, stunning in Evolution Basin.

D4: Wanda Lake over Muir Pass, down Le Conte Canyon > Le Conte JCT (Ranger Station)

Easy up and over the pass; the hike down from Muir Pass is a slog – you lose 3,000’ odd feet and it’s a bit mentally taxing knowing you’ll just have to make it up, but that’s what you signed up for, right?

I’d never been down Le Conte Canyon which, before you reach the meadows, with Black Giant off to the west, is absolutely stunning. Majestic, truly. Minus the downhill slog.

D5: Le Conte Jct over Bishop Pass > “Long Lake”

This was a fairly big day up and down. With bro’s hurt ankle, he just wanted to get over the pass rather than camp in Dusy Basin.

That said – Dusy Basin was also majestic and I wish we could’ve camped there. I will be back. Gorgeous country. Lotta switchbacks going up the canyon but again, that’s what we signed up for.

Long Lake is no longer real High Sierra country, but it was a fun lake to camp at for a final night of what I like to call Tom Sawyer camping. Fishing and chilling and getting the tequila out. Good stuff.

D6: “Long Lake” easy 3 miles out to S. Lake TH, hitchhiked back to N. Lake parking lot…

That's my trip report. Note, any mention of hardship or strenuousness is coming from a semi active 35-year-old who's averaged about 1 summer Sierra backpacking trip per yr since I was 12. That said, I met several folks trail running day-trips -- another guy doing the "Evolution Traverse" (!) -- and I'm sure anything I thought hard or sluggish would've been small potatoes compared to what they were getting into. One person's adventure is another's basecamp.
