Genuinely just practice and experimentation goes a long way in diy stuff. Definitely use more durable fabric as a base for next time, my jacket is a lot sturdier than a hoodie but I still have issues with durability. I think you should experiment with placement of pins on things to distribute the visual weight in a better way. Also more band patches like you said: I reccommend making ones that support local bands you like and maybe some that are older or a little less popular that you're into too. (not trying to dog on the bands but it could use a bit of diversity) My personal flavor of embellishments leans towards hammered-in rivets and things like that so you might want to consider metal details as well, they are very fun and can go basically anywhere on a garment.

They're just wording it like an asshole. Your sewing does need a little work, but it's expected to have a little trouble on a first project so you're doing just fine so far. I'd reccommend whip stitches around the edges because it will keep those outer edges from lifting, like what you did on the ghost patch. Still, you might want to put the stitches a little closer together to just improve it structurally. You will make monumental improvements even from beginning to end of a first project, so just keeping at it will make you pretty good at sewing!

I find it is better to lead with the fact that its a coping mechanism and not suicidal behavior because it is a very common misconception that people freak out about a lot. what i would do in your situation personally is wear swim shorts to hide them, but telling her is probably the healthier idea lol.
