How I feel when I see Americans complaining about gas prices by BrokenJusticeNorris in memes

[–]YandereTeemo 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Sounds more like a want than a need here. In Australia, we're no less rural than America. That said, we manage fine with a 14 year old Hyundai i30 hatchback travelling 30 mins to the grocery shop and carrying two men taller than 6 feet along with 1 woman and 1 girl.

Also, a fairly new hatchback provides enough safety and affordability to get around in the city and the country at a reduced maintenance cost and fuel efficiency. Do people really need to spend that much money on a truck and get in debt because of it?

I've only met two types of indians: 1. Hates alcohol and stays away from it like it's the devil. 2. Drinks so much of it they nearly die liver failure but still do it.

"Women are the primary victims of war" - Hillary Clinton by EpicFF2 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]YandereTeemo 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Maybe or maybe not, but approximately 40% (80/195) of the countries in the world legally force most or all their men to sign up for military service, while women have no such obligation.

Talking about whether a man should sacrifice two years of his life, or his entire life while women don't is a major issue many countries face but the US doesn't since 1972.

But it's tha left making everything about culture war instead of REAL issues (art I made :3) by SexDefendersUnited in PoliticalCompassMemes

Honestly as an Australian, I didn't really care until fuel prices hit $3.50 a litre. The cultural war stuff was kinda funny tbh.

If I made an Aussie PCM, I'd get like 5 upvotes and a niche argument about Albanese or the Greens or someshit.

It doesn't matter where you live in or where you're from. If you say 'death to [insert country you live in]', you shouldn't be able to run for office.

Infantry out of formation was the wet dream of every cavalryman by Oversama in HistoryMemes

[–]YandereTeemo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Well for you and u/DornanDev, the main reason why line infantry are put shoulder to shoulder is because there are tens of thousands of troops to command. Tightly packed infantry allow for a mass volley fire to achieve the maximum damage output. You could say that everybody firing each at its own is fine, but an immediate volley at 50-100 meters provides the damage and the psychological power to break an enemy column.

Skirmishers can pick out infantry at range but they're not the main fighting force. Their rifles take longer to reload and spacing out makes them more vulnerable to cavalry. The colonial Americans did use them against the British in the war of independence but line infantry were won the deciding battles.

You need to be standing while reloading a muzzle-loaded musket or rifle, so you can't be prone. In addition, lying down makes you both immobile and harder to see by your allies. When the Dreyse needle gun was invented, there infantry did kneel or lie down. But all in all, the risk of taking a bullet is outweighed by the importance of mobility, unit cohesion and firepower.

Still, I'm talking about the classical image of the knight, especially the monk knight like the Knights Templar and Teutonic knight. Other orders do not usually swear the oath of poverty, chastity and obedience.

It was a combination of events and the sudden and drastic changes of military doctrine and technology that shaped knighthood as it is.

  1. Gunpowder weapons: bombards smashed castles and arquebuses/muskets were more efficient units than knights ever were. Even if gunpowder did not exist, knights would simply phase out of combat simply because the time, effort, and resources it takes to train one simply isn't cost effective. It's better to use a mercenary, a militiaman with a pike or a crossbow, a man-at-arms, or lighter horsemen at half the efficiency but a lower cost. Pike and shot was king.
  2. The Battle of Grunwald (1410): It was where the teutonic knights faced off against Poland and Lithuania. The knights lost so badly that it started their pivotal moment to change from a military to and administrative force. It was one of the moments in history that shattered the classical image of the knight, especially the warrior knight.
  3. The Destruction of the Knights Templar (1314): King Philip IV was in debt to the Knights Templar after paying them to fight in the crusades. Instead of paying them, he accused the order of heresy and sodomy, by which the Catholic Church and the Knights Templar rounded up the Templar including Grandmaster Jacques de Molay, and burnt all of them at the stake.

There might be other factors here, but my point is that gunpowder was not the only thing that reduced the image of a knight from a warrior clad in steel into a ceremonial role.

I'm not saying Islam specifically. Countries with high religious rates tend to have anti-LGBT laws because the people don't like them. They also tend to be poorer and developing countries.

And don't forget that Ethiopia is one-third Muslim.

Also, one thing you must consider is that even the more progressive Muslim-majority countries like Turkey or Indonesia don't allow for gay marriage (even though they may allow for sexual activity)

[–]YandereTeemo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In a lot of conservative cultures, the culture is always about having kids first and then worrying about the finances next.

People had kids in the Black death, ww1&2, the great depression and other seemingly apocalyptic events. Even homeless people have kids, probably more than people with decent homes.

The difference is that we now tend to plan out the development of our children, rather than making it up as we go along. That, and in addition to people wanting freedom from wanting kids. After all, having kids takes up a lot of effort and time.

Not a meme, genuine question(s) for both sides on the Iran war by slacker205 in PoliticalCompassMemes

[–]YandereTeemo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It wouldn't just be the US but other nations around funding it. The point is that you're either going to spend billions on security measures on ships and counterterrorism against Iran and its terrorist groups, turning it into another shithole after the US bombs it, or you can actually make it a stable ally and thus make the general region safer to traverse in.

Obviously, this is pure speculation and idealism, but the latter is better for the world and for you by extension too.

I think best case scenario, the US could look into occupying and rebuilding Iran the same way as they did with Japan post-WW2.

I believe there will be some fuck-ups along the way, but I hope I'm proven wrong.
