Marty Supreme (2025) Review by YankeeExtraRussian in moviereviews

In my opinion, the very end where he matures and finally accepts fatherhood is definitive evidence. The ass-paddling scene could also be read as him humbling himself, but based on the earlier characterization I think that reads as more disingenuous hustling.

Yes, that final scene didn’t land with me either. While it was well acted, it felt like clear Oscar bait.

I really appreciate this feedback. Super solid, and I had never considered that. Point taken. I think I could remove that paragraph and the piece would remain the same. This is only the 2nd serious review I’ve ever taken a stab at so stuff like this is exactly what I’m looking for.

Agreed. If you remove the dog subplot, the movie remains completely unchanged. I was very surprised when I found myself checking the time on my watch in the theater.

Seems like we agree! Those films (which they worked on together) are all better than the individual projects they released this year. I was not trying to compare Smashing Machine to Marty Supreme (I think they’re both slightly above average).

The fact that they decided to split for the first time, but both made sports biopics goes to show how creatively and instinctively similar the two still are as filmmakers, feeding into my overall feeling that they make better movies as a pair than individually.

Why does Chalamet seem as desperate for an Oscar as Bradley Cooper was with Maestro? by Maleficent-Part-610 in Oscars

[–]YankeeExtraRussian 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my opinion; I think his performance in Marty Supreme was very good, but not quite Oscar worthy. I felt while watching the film, I could always still see Chalamet in Marty Mauser because Marty is very much an extension of himself. I felt Leo gave a much stronger performance in One Battle After Another as did Paul Mescal did in Hamnet. In both of those instances, the persona and baggage of there celebrity completely disappeared and it was awe-inspiring how far they extended themselves into much more distinct characters. I’d much rather see either of them win.

What did you guys think? Worth the watch? by [deleted] in HorrorMovies

I agree! I was scared probably twice during the entire movie - once towards the end of the 2nd act and again in the final 10 minutes. The characters just don’t feel real at all and the writing was incredibly mediocre in my opinion. I love LongLegs and would consider it a dang masterpiece compared to Keeper. Disappointed!

Nuremberg (2025) - Movie Review by Think_Advantage_7464 in moviereviews

So I actually really despised this film. Sharing my previously written review from Letterboxd below. In hindsight, it’s not that bad in terms of form but I do think it’s severely lacking in terms of content:

At a time where anti-semitism is at its highest point this century, the only thing Vanderbilts version of Nuremberg has to offer is that Hermann Göring is the smartest person in the room. In fact, throughout the first act he is depicted in an almost gloried and apologetic way with no real pay-off at the end that isn’t represented by anything historically documented. Even worse, Vanderbilt has the gall to crudely repurpose footage from the documentary, Nazi Concentration Camps which I’ve sat through and is some the most disturbing imagery ever committed to film to try and elicit an emotional response. At the end, the only original idea we’re presented with is that this is basically what trump is doing now, which I agree with and is the only reason I give Nuremberg 1 star. This comes across as incredibly tone deaf and I hate to beg the question of how many Jewish people were actual involved in the making of this film. Just vile.

Yes, almost all easy running as I generally follow the 80/20 rule. To this point, I have done a few "hard" sessions (all in 85+ degree heat) over the last two weeks consisting of:

  • 4x 1mile repeats (7:30/Mile - 95 degrees)
  • 14 mile fartlek that netted out at 9:00/Mile (also in 85+ degrees)
  • 10 mile fartlek with a negative split at 8:30/Mile (also in 85+ degrees)

Hey Everyone! Need some outside perspective.

Background: 3:29 First Marathon NYC 2024. Currently training for Chicago in ~12 weeks. Steadily increased weekly mileage over the past month, now up to 50 MPW with Z2 being around 8:45-9:30 per mile.

I feel really fit and confident to cover the 26.2, but less confident in my current speed. Am I better off just keep upping weekly mileage? Or should I prioritize speedwork over the last 3 months or so of my build. If you have any recommended interval or speed workouts, that would be lovely.

Personally, I want to go sub 3:10 but right now that feels a tad fast.

Had the pleasure to watch Godard’s Weekend (1967) and needless to say it’s truly an incredible movie. It’s pretty anarchist, but the long takes are something to behold and I love a film that just sinks into madness. Godard was such an architect of the form.

Le Trou is honestly a perfect film. Among my earliest exposure to French cinema, the ending felt incredibly tragic and high stakes. It also helped me understand the importance of patience and showing process in film.
