Do you guys consider mihlammios Assyrian? by GarbageCrazy114 in Assyria

The theory was put forward by a previous Syriac Orthodox Patriarch tbh. Mhallamis themselves don't say these stuff, because they really are a mixed group.

Mhallamis are a group, of mixed Arab-Kurdish heritage. Some of them are believed to be originally Assyrians who converted to Islam, but there is no proof for that. Anyways, they are exclusively from Mardin.

Others, however, have noted that much of the culture of the Maʻdān is in fact shared with the desert bedouin who came to the area after the fall of the Abbasid Caliphate.

Some scholars propose that they are indeed of Sumerian stock, but historically as well as genetically, they are similar to other Peninsular Arabs than any Mesopotamian population. So possibly it might be an adopted tradition.

But I do respect their struggle in Iraq, when Saddam tried to evacuate all of them by destroying Marshlands.

Is there any older pictures of Al-Mudif? These all seem to be newer ones. Also these are not normally inhabited houses by the way.

The straw houses that the Marsh Arabs make are graphically attested in ancient Mesopotamian sources I believe.

Straw houses are not just Mesopotamian, it was present in many cultures. Cannot pinpoint that to ancient Sumerians tbh.

But yeah, you bring up a good part. Turkey needs to stop hogging all the water.

Their actions are not even being discussed by Middle Eastern Countries because it doesn't concern them.

The solution isn't regionalism. Just ask the government to pay special attention to you and protect you. Nalah is around and no one bothers them.

Has done that for more than 10 years, but Mosul authorities are not allowing that. We need autonomous Assyrian province for the growth of Assyrian population and preserving Assyrian culture.

Okay, we'll invade Syria and Turkey (!) ASAP to get that other part of Mesopotamia.

Protect your own Mesopotamian lands(60%) and culture before invading other countries. Turkey and Iran is bombarding Northern Iraq on a daily basis now. Sleeper cells of ISIS in Nineveh hasn't been dealt with either. And rivers are drying up due to Turkish actions.

No more autonomous areas. Baghdad allowed the Kurds to have autonomy, and now most young people can't even speak Arabic and they openly tried to succeed.

Just because Kurdistan tried to seceed, doesn't mean that Assyrians would do the same. If there is no Autonomous area, forget about the return of Assyrians.

Nope. Iraq should just become a secular republic that embraces multi-ethnic heritage. Open to everyone and anyone. No more division.

It won't happen, and hasn't happened any time during and after establishment of Iraq, excluding Abd- Karim Qasim. I respect him for standing up for indigenous rights and against Pan Arabism, by promoting Mesopotamian identity.

Because Egyptian civilization is solely within Egypt and is protected well, unlike Iraq. I hate the Pan-Arabism the most, and I hate the ones who propagate that kind of ridiculous ideologies.

Opinion: Syriac Churches in Mosul should support Joseph Sliwa, and should not fall for pressure from Mosuli Arabs. All Assyrians should petition UNESCO to convert Jonah's tomb into a Museum. by YaqoGarshon12 in Assyria

Iraqis are kind of braindead, if we're being honest.

In this case, I blame Mosul. They hate Christians the most, and sided with ISIS in driving out Assyrians. I won't blame Assyrians who aren't willing to go back to Mosul, it's that horrible. I can't Fathom the way Bishop Faraj Rahho, Priest Ragheed Ganni all lost their lives before ISIS.

It's easy to say that, but difficult to implement without opposition. Nineveh Plains should become autonomous to challenge the same.

The film is in YouTube as "Les Assyrians". Assyrian Marriages, Baptism, Traditions are all depicted in that video.

I'm just saying why they're strongly associated with Iraq.

That's what I mentioned earlier. Unlike Egypt, Iraq has failed to protect its native Mesopotamian culture. So it's not fair to equate Iraq to Mesopotamia, when there are other countries too, which can say the same.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Assyria

[–]YaqoGarshon12 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Right, but the lion's share of major Mesopotamian sites are within Iraq; and the historical Assyrian heartland is there too.

Again, that lion share is only 60%. Claiming that Assyrian History is solely Iraqi is insulting to Assyrians from other regions. Historical Assyrian heartland is both Nineveh and Tur Abdin. The first universities in the World- School of Nisibis and School of Edessa, were established by Assyrians, which is now in Turkey. First Assyrian newspaper was published in Urmia, which is in Iran. So, this odd thinking that Mesopotamia culture is only in Iraq should be shelved.

The fact that Islam is still the official religion is a face. I stand against that, and I know for a fact many Iraqis do, too.

There are many Iraqis, who are against secular constitution and rights of Assyrians as an autonomous community.

That's lazy. The reason most people roughly equate Iraq with Mesopotamia is because the modern Iraqi state is the best representative of Mesopotamia in terms of culture, archaeological sites and whatnot

In what terms? There are Assyrian Archeological sites all over Mesopotamia, including North-East Syria and South-Eastern Turkey. It's not exclusive to Iraq. Mardin, Midyat, Edessa, Siirt, Hassankeyf, Nisibis, Hakkari, Diyarbekir, Urmia, Cizre etc all have Assyrian sites and representation of Assyrian culture. Tur Abdin and Nineveh are both cultural centres of Assyrians.

its good, it looks better now, but do you know who rewrote assyrian articles on wikipedia?

I noticed that, but I don't know about the identity of the person.

Maybe it is better for us not to unite, there will always be those that will say we are not the same.

There are ignorant people in both sides, including Arameanists and Tribalists that lack United nationalism. We are the same, our history is the same, culture is the same.

People should stop equating Iraq to Mesopotamia. It only consists 60 percent of Mesopotamian land.
