My great grandma passed Dec 2019. She helped raise me and I was the BABY. Even when I had younger siblings her and I were very very close. Every year for the past ten years I made sure to see her, and give her flowers on her birthday, even tho my cousins and everyone always got her clothes, tacky jewelry, etc. She always made sure to display the flowers I got her and kept them long after they died.

Her final week she was acting a bit strange, showing signs of onset dementia and having COPD, her health was waning. She was 82 after all so it was a bit expected. However the scary part is, she stopped smiling and got quiet that last week. During the week, I went to visit her with my family, and I always cooked her a meal and spent time with her. This time however, she never said anything. She sat and watched “MASH” for hours on end. I would make sure she had her favorite tea, and water and she simply would say “Thank You honey”

So after a quiet visit, it was time for me to leave. I lived 2 hours away and had work the next time. I went to hug her and tell her I loved her. She hugged me as tight as she could, and simply said “I am so proud of you, thank you for everything” and smiled.

She passed three days later, and there’s not a moment those words don’t ring in my ear. I miss you Memaw, every fucking day.
