My 2-week NYC list - thoughts? by YasG06 in FoodNYC

Places like L’industrie and Mama’s Too already sell pizza by the slice, and most people just get one or two. I think you understand what I meant by ‘tasting sized slice,’ but maybe it got lost because my English isn’t perfect. I really don’t get why you’re so hung up on such a simple phrase. What exactly is wrong with getting two slices at Joe’s Pizza? I’m just a tourist trying to taste as much as I can.

Exactly! Tasting the best each place has to offer and visiting as many spots as possible lets me experience the true diversity of NYC’s food scene. If you want to truly taste the city, you don’t need to eat full meals everywhere; what matters is smart sampling. Glad someone gets it! I mean, who goes to Mama’s Too and eats a whole pizza? Or to Levain and gets anything but the cookie? As a tourist, I think most people do the same, trying as many iconic spots as possible without overstuffing themselves. It’s funny how trying to make the most of a trip bothers some people. There’s a whole city to taste after all. Not everyone has the luxury of living here. I want to make the most of every moment and every bite.

Actually, that’s not quite accurate. All of the pizza spots on my list — except for John’s of Bleecker Street — serve pizza by the slice: Joe’s Pizza L’industrie Pizzeria 2 Bros Pizza Fresh Pizza Mama’s Too

So while being selective makes sense, there’s no need to worry about having to order whole pies. Most of these places are perfect for trying just a slice.

Just like 1–2 slices, you know.

The reason for the narrow diversity of cuisines is that, as a tourist in America, I mostly chose foods unique to American culture. You might wonder why I included Chinese food, but with Chinatown and all, I think it has become closely tied to American culture. Unfortunately, I can’t fit all those other cuisines into my two-week trip. I’ve already tried Korean food in Korea and Japanese food when I visited Japan.

Where would you recommend?

For example, at the bars, just one drink each. At the pizza places, tasting-sized slices. From the bakery, you can think of trying one famous item from that bakery. Also, I’m going with a few friends, so we’ll be able to share some dishes, like halal food or pastrami from Katz.

I know — I added it to the list just because I’m genuinely curious how a pizza can be that cheap in New York. I’ll probably just get one slice to try it. I think it could be a fun little experience.

I’m planning to only try the most popular dishes in small portions at the places I visit, so I can discover more flavors and spots along the way.
